Abstract: Using data from the 1987 National Medical Expenditure Survey (NMES) and the Household Component of the 2001 MEPS (MEPS-HC), this statistical brief compares estimates from 1987 and 2001 on the use of prescribed medicines in the U.S. civilian noninstitutionalized (community) age 18 and older (adult) population as part of the treatment for specific chronic conditions.

Abstract: This statistical brief summarizes differences in expenditures for outpatient prescription medicines reported for specific conditions by the household in the U.S. civilian noninstitutionalized population for the years 1987 and 2001. The data used are derived from the 1987 NMES and the 2001 MEPS-HC.

Abstract: This statistical brief summarizes data that indicate a significant growth between 1987 and 2001 in the use (i.e., number of purchases) and expenditures for outpatient prescribed medicines in the U.S. civilian noninstitutionalized population. The data used are derived from the 1987 NMES and the 2001 MEPS-HC. The estimates from the 1987 NMES were adjusted for inflation using data from the 1987 and 2001 Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U).

Abstract: In this statistical brief, data from the Access to Care Supplement of the 2001 MEPS-HC were used to estimate 1) the proportion of people who lack a usual source of care, by race/ethnicity, sex, and age; and 2) the proportions by race/ethnicity with regard to the reasons for not having a usual source of care.

Abstract: This statistical brief presents preliminary findings based on smoking data obtained from the self-administered questionnaire (SAQ). Self-reported data from the SAQ were used in concert with demographic, chronic condition, and preventive care information collected in the core MEPS instrument to describe the prevalence of smoking in the United States.
