Title: The uninsured in America—2001. Estimates for the civilian noninstitutionalized population under age 65
Publication: MEPS Statistical Brief No. 4. Available on the MEPS Web site
Date: 2002
Abstract: The uninsured population in the United States is an issue of public policy concern for several reasons. First, health insurance is viewed as necessary to ensure that people have access to medical care and protection against the risk of costly and unforeseen medical events. Timely and reliable estimates of the population's health insurance status are vital to evaluate the costs and expected impact of public policy interventions to expand coverage or to change the way that private and public insurance is funded. Finally, comparisons of the characteristics of insured and uninsured populations over time give information on whether greater equity has been achieved in insurance coverage or whether serious gaps remain.

Abstract: This report presents information concerning expenses and sources of payment for nursing homes for 1987 and 1996. A nursing home was defined as having at least three beds, being either certified by Medicare or Medicaid or licensed by a government agency as a nursing home, and providing 24-hour skilled nursing care. Some other surveys, including the National Nursing Home Survey, conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics, used a broader definition that does not require the facility to provide round-the-clock nursing care.
