Appendix Figure 2. Literature Search and Retrieval Results (Text Description)

Appendix Figure 2 diagrams the literature search and retrieval results. The databases searched are listed at the top: MEDLINE®, PsycINFO (including dissertation abstracts), HealthSTAR, CINAHL, and the Cochrane Controlled Trials Registry.

Arrows lead from the list of databases through each step in the process of elimination of articles retrieved for possible review to the final number of articles that were included in the summary of the evidence.

The total abstracts or titles captured in database searches were 4331. Titles or abstracts not meeting initial inclusion/exclusion criteria were 4230.

The remaining 101 articles were retrieved for more detailed evaluation. Of those, 26 did not meet initial inclusion/exclusion criteria.

The remaining 75 articles were potentially appropriate to be included in the review.

To those 75, the authors added 62 articles from other sources. For the resulting total of 137 articles, the authors read the full text, reapplied the initial eligibility criteria, and applied initial quality criteria.

The authors excluded 93 of the 137 articles from analysis (with reasons). They included the remaining 44 in their review.

Of those 44, 27 did not meet final quality and setting criteria. The remaining 16 were included in the summary of the evidence. Of those, 12 were articles on adults (including older adults; 3 were articles on pregnant women and 1 was an article on adolescents.
