This diagram illustrates the search and selection process for literature about screening. The authors searched 3 sources:

From MEDLINE® 1999-April 2003, 223 titles were captured.
From the Cochrane, Systematic Review & Randomized Trials Registry, 1999-2003, 18 titles were captured.
From reference lists and expert suggestion following the 2001 report review, 13 titles were captured.

The authors reviewed a total of 254 captured titles and/or abstracts with eligibility criteria.

Of those, 42 were chosen, and eligibility criteria were reapplied to their full texts.

Of those, 2 were chosen as eligible for screening for amblyopia in preschool populations.
