The figure is a graph showing the number of preventable hospitalizations per 1,000 children, by region of the Nation. In the Northeast, Jersey City had the highest rate, slightly more than 25 per 1,000 children. In New York, the rate was 17. In Newark, Philadelphia, and Nassau-Suffolk, the rate was between 10 and 15. In Providence, Buffalo, Springfield, and Rochester, the rate was between 5 and 10. In the South, the rate of preventable hospitalizations was highest in Richmond, with 16 per 1,000 children, followed by Miami, with a rate of 15. In Tampa, Daytona Beach, and Washington, DC, the rate was between 10 and 15. In Jacksonville, Norfolk, and Atlanta, the rate was between 5 and 10. In the Midwest, the rate was 13 in Saginaw and approaching 12 in Chicago. In Milwaukee, Kalamazoo, Kansas City, and Grand Rapids, the rate was between 5 and 10. In the West, Riverside had a rate of preventable hospitalizations of 10 per 1,000 children. In Los Angeles, Denver, Las Vegas, San Jose, and Ventura, the rate was between 5 and 10. In Portland, the rate was slightly less than 5.
