Mapping Tools for Monitoring the Safety Net

Figure 7. Adults with Health Care Service Access Barrier by Census Tract and House of Representatives District Boundaries in Boone County, MO (1998)

Map of Boone County, Missouri, showing a House of Representatives district boundaries over census tracts to indicate the proportion of adults who said they realized a barrier to health care access. Go to Text Description [D] for details.

[D] Figure 7 is a map of Boone County, MO, that previously appeared in an Archives of Family Medicine article by some of the authors (Phillips, Parchman, and Miyoshi, 2001). This map shows census tracts that are shaded to show the proportion of adults who said they realized a barrier to health care access in the previous year. Overlaid are Missouri House of Representatives district boundaries. This map was used to show how Geographical Information Systems could be used to relate evidence about people with health access problems to accountable political leaders. It presents an option for safety net providers to frame health care improvement opportunities with political or policy options.
