Communication on Partner Violence
Grant Number: K08 HS13913
Duration: 4
years (2006-2010)
Total Award: $499,900
Project Description: This research has four main
aims:
- Describe the content and style of patient-provider communication
regarding intimate partner violence (IPV) during the initial obstetric visit.
- Describe associations between communication and IPV disclosure.
- Describe
the patients' perspectives on the discussion including how it affected their
intentions to attempt to change their situation to increase their safety.
- Develop a provider communication intervention on how to ask and counsel
about IPV.
Career Goals: Dr. Chang is an OB/GYN [obstetrician/gynecologist] and
holds several academic appointments within the University of Pittsburgh. She is also a Scholar in the Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in
Women's Health (BIRCWH) Program. She has received numerous academic awards.
Her long-term career goal is to improve women's health and health care services
by becoming a pre-eminent researcher in examining and improving communication
between women and their health care providers. Of particular interest is how
patient-provider communication regarding sensitive behavioral topics affects
health behavior and health outcomes for women and how interventions to improve
this communication may serve as vehicles to improve women's health care.
Progress to Date: Dr. Chang has recruited 51 obstetric care providers and 277 patients. She has obtained over 200 audiotaped visits, pre-visit surveys, and post-visit surveys.
Future Plans: Subject recruitment and data collection will be completed. A transcriptionist was recruited and this work should also be completed next year. Dr. Chang will continue her proposed career development efforts and clinical work.
