Haukoos, Jason
Institution: Denver Health and Hospital Authority
Grant Title: Strategies to Identify
Undiagnosed HIV Infection in the Emergency Department
Grant Number: K02 HS17526
Duration: 5
years (2008-2013)
Total Award: $556,200
Project Description: This research has three main
aims:
- Use large prospectively-collected database to derive a clinical
prediction instrument to accurately identify HIV serpositivity.
- Conduct a
nested prospective cohort study to externally validate the clinical prediction
instrument in the emergency department (ED).
- Conduct a quasi-experimental equivalent
time-samples clinical trial to assess the clinical effectiveness of using an
empirically-derived clinical instrument, a conventional HIV behavioral risk
screening instrument, or no screening as a means to stratify ED patients into
groups at risk for HIV infection in the ED.
Career Goals: Dr. Haukoos is an Assistant Professor
and Director of Research in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Denver Health Medical Center. He received his M.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and did his residency in
Emergency Medicine at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. Following his residency, he completed
a fellowship in Clinical Research at the same location and simultaneously
earned his M.Sc. in Epidemiology from UCLA School of Public Health. The
grantee's long-term careers goals include conducting high quality collaborative
health services research and develop an extramurally-funded Emergency Medicine
Research Center in Denver in order to provide infrastructure for conducting
clinical and health services research and for developing a successful and
sustained research fellowship training program.
Progress to Date: The derivation of a clinical prediction instrument to identify HIV seropositivity has recently been completed. The results of this work were accepted for presentation at the 2009 Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections and a manuscript is also being developed. The grantee has four publications and four more in press.
Future Plans:
Aim #1 will be completed during the next year and work on Aim #2 will begin. Dr. Haukoos will continue his proposed career development activities.
