Project Description: This project will develop a Health Services Research Initiative within the UTPA institute for Population Health Policy to strengthen the research environment at UTPA and to enhance the competitiveness of faculty members in health services research. The research activities under the HSR Initiative primarily focus on health disparities and health care utilization/access for priority populations, specifically, low-income minority populations in the U.S.-Mexico border and the uninsured. The completion of four small individual research projects are planned to develop faculty. These research projects are:

  • Community Uninsurance and the Quality and Access to Health Care in the U.S.
  • Lifetime Cos-effectiveness and Net-benefits of School-based Health Promotion Programs.
  • Explaining Cross-Border Utilization of Health Care: Evidence from the Lower Rio Grande Valley.
  • Extreme Weather, Health Insurance Coverage and Health.
