Department/Agency Name: Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR)

Abstract:
This conference examined the need for improved information from and for consumers within the
changing health care system. For example, consumers evaluating health plans need information on the
availability, quality, and outcomes of plans' services and on the satisfaction of persons currently enrolled in
each of these plans. Employers need information with which to determine the effectiveness, efficiency, and
value of the health care services they offer employees. Health plans need information on what consumers
experience and what they think about their care. Papers presented include a synthesis of current literature,
critiques of existing surveys, discussions on the challenges of surveying subpopulations, and descriptions of
the uses of information from consumer surveys. Also included are presentations and discussions of the
methodological and policy issues involved in collecting and distributing consumer information.

This is a summary of a conference sponsored by AHCPR and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
