Project Description: This research has four main aims:
- Use in-hospital administrative database to describe variation in treatment patterns to inform methodological implications for comparative effectiveness (CE) research.
- Evaluate additional confounding and outcome assessment available in linked in- and out-of-hospital data sources versus in-hospital data alone.
- Improve methods for evaluation of CE and safety of in-hospital treatments.
- Develop methods of confounding adjustment based on information found in hospital emergency medical rooms (EMRs).
Career Goals: Dr. Rassen is an Instructor of Medicine in the Division of Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacoeconomics at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He received in ScD in epidemiology from the Harvard School of Public Health. His career goal is to become an independent researcher in the field of comparative effectiveness with a focus on in-hospital drug and device exposures. Dr. Rassen plans to develop new data- and computer-intensive methods for reducing residual confounding when studying intended and unintended treatment effects in non-randomized research.
Progress to Date: The grantee assembled and analyzed pilot data, developed protocols and in junction with data vendors, determined precise parameters for the final data pull. Work on Aim #1 began with Dr. Rassen describing the utilization patterns and changes in treatments over time with respect to one of the three example drugs. Work on Aim #2 has been focused on developing the precise protocols and synchronizing the request between the two data vendors.
Future Plans: The grantee will work on the full dataset on tasks relating to Aim #2. The descriptive and analytic work associated with Aim #1 will continue. Regarding Aim #3, issues relating to IV analysis will progress.
