Dr. Dean Schillinger, professor of medicine at University of California, San Francisco, suggests that you first elicit the patient’s understanding of his or her symptoms and disease or condition. If you recognize that the patient needs more or better information, be aware that these concepts may be new.
System-level interventions can make health education more robust and effective. For example, technology can help patients visualize concepts and can reinforce teachings to promote patient understanding and retention. This technology might also be used in between in-person visits, particularly with patients who are computer literate and can access applications from home.
