Integrated State Health Information Systems

Issues for the States

Presenter:

Deborah Chollet, Ph.D., Associate Director, Alpha Center.

In this session, participants had an opportunity to share their specific concerns related to the development or use of integrated health information systems.

From an analysis of responses to a pre-workshop questionnaire, Dr. Chollet noted that States were experiencing common problems regardless of the stage of development of their systems and regardless of whether their system integration efforts were within a single agency or spanned agencies.

These problems included:

  • Design Issues (developing standards; linking systems; what next steps).
  • Technical Issues (choosing and keeping up with rapidly changing technology).
  • Data Issues (lack of standards for collection and format; multiple storage locations).
  • Funding Issues (initial cost is high; stable funding for maintenance and improvement of system once implemented).
