Summary: The aim of this study is to assess the relationship between hospital quality improvement structures, practices and selected quality indicators in a sample of 854+ hospitals. The study will combine unique survey data on these hospital structures and practices with data derived from hospital discharge abstract data under the HCUP program at AHRQ. Children will be incorporated in these data, but researchers will not produce a specific analysis for children.

Summary: This project will assess (1) which diseases have contributed most to health care cost growth at the population level, (2) the role of technology in contributing to cost growth, and (3) the types of technology that have influenced cost growth since 1996 and the types of patients to which they have been applied. Women, minorities and children will be included in this study.

Summary: This study will evaluate outcomes in school-age children who were very low birth weight infants, using three population-based data sets from the Netherlands, Canada, and the United States. Recommendations will be made for the development of ethical, cost-effective, and appropriate strategies for clinical management and resource allocation.

Summary: This study will (1) document baseline patterns of service utilization for 12 common chronic conditions; (2) identify diagnoses, utilization patterns and sociodemographic characteristics associated with voluntary managed care enrollment; and (3) compare the utilization and cost of services for the 12 diagnoses.
