Library of Resources for Chronic Diseases Effective Health Care Program Sign up: EHC Inside Track newsletter email updates The AHRQ Library of Resources for Chronic Diseases offers important research updates and educational information to help with the management of diseases and conditions. Chronic diseases are the most prevalent healthcare problems in the United States, with nearly half (45 percent) of all Americans reporting at least one chronic illness.[1] Many chronic diseases are lifelong conditions, and their impact lessens the quality of life not only of those suffering from the diseases, but also of family members, caregivers, and others[2]. More than two-thirds of all deaths are caused by one or more of the most common chronic diseases, including: Breathing ConditionsCancerDevelopmental Delays, ADHD, and AutismDiabetesDigestive System ConditionsHeart and Blood Vessel ConditionsMental HealthMuscle, Bone, and Joint ConditionsChronic Diseases Breathing ConditionsThis category includes diseases such as obstructive sleep apnea and cystic fibrosis, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, and other common chronic lung diseases including emphysema, chronic bronchitis, refractory asthma, and bronchiectasis. In all cases, damage or blockage of the airways interferes with the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide in lungs.Resources for CliniciansResearch Reports:Breathing Exercises and/or Retraining Techniques in the Treatment of Asthma: Comparative EffectivenessA Review of Quality of Care Evaluation for the Palliation of DyspneaMortality Risk in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Patients Using TheophyllineOutcomes Associated With Tiotropium use in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease PatientsResearch Reviews:Noninvasive Positive-Pressure Ventilation (NPPV) for Acute Respiratory FailureEffectiveness of Recombinant Human Growth Hormone in the Treatment of Cystic FibrosisClinician Summaries:Noninvasive Positive-Pressure Ventilation for Acute Respiratory Failure: Comparative EffectivenessComparative Effectiveness of Diagnosis and Treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea in AdultsUse of Recombinant Human Growth Hormone for Pediatric Patients With Cystic FibrosisCME/CE Activities:Noninvasive Positive-Pressure Ventilation for Acute Respiratory Failure: Comparative EffectivenessGuidance for Informed and Shared Decision Making about Diagnostic Tools and Treatments for Obstructive Sleep ApneaComparative Effectiveness of Diagnosis and Treatment of Obstructive Sleep ApneaEffectiveness of Recombinant Human Growth Hormone (rhGH) in the Treatment of Patients With Cystic FibrosisSlide Library:Noninvasive Positive-Pressure Ventilation for Acute Respiratory Failure: Comparative EffectivenessDiagnosis and Treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea in AdultsEffectiveness of Recombinant Human Growth Hormone in the Treatment of Cystic FibrosisResources for ConsumersConsumer Summaries:Treating Sleep Apnea: A Review of the Research for AdultsHuman Growth Hormone for Children With Cystic Fibrosis: A Review of the Research for Parents and CaregiversPodcasts:Cystic Fibrosis TreatmentWrong Beliefs About AsthmaAsthma and MinoritiesHow to Manage Chronic DiseasesTop of Page CancerCancer is a term for a large group of different diseases, all involving unregulated cell growth. AHRQ is providing this library of resources for health professionals and consumers to help them compare and discuss treatment options in order to make more informed decisions and improve the quality of their health care. These resources are the latest in a series of AHRQ's growing library of free English and Spanish-language publications that review the scientific evidence on various health conditions so consumers and clinicians can work together to learn more about the benefits and risks of different treatment options. These free AHRQ resources can be downloaded from this site or they can be ordered by contacting the AHRQ Publications Clearinghouse at AHRQPubs@ahrq.hhs.gov.
