Expanding the Use of the AHRQ PQI This report represents the viewpoint of one stakeholder group, and is an important initial step in researching alternative Prevention Quality Indicator applications. This report explores potential additional uses for the Prevention Quality Indicators, namely expanding the application to large physician groups or payer organizations. The report details the findings from expert panels of clinicians, who assessed the face validity of current and expanded uses of preventable hospitalization indicators for quality improvement, comparative report and pay-for performance initiatives. Future research should focus on obtaining additional stakeholder input, refinement of indicator specifications and development of risk adjustment techniques prior to widespread use of the PQIs in these expanded applications.
