The x axis shows States and the y axis shows State admissions per 100,000 and other State rates per 100 population. Horizontal lines represent the U.S. admission rate and its confidence interval. The admission rate is 27.5 and the confidence interval is 25 to 30.

The States shown are Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Texas, Washington, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. Data are approximate. Diabetes prevalence rates range between 3 and 5 for most states, and West Virginia is around 7. Poverty rates range between a low of 8 for Wisconsin and a high of 20 for West Virginia, with most states between 10 and 15. Kentucky and Texas are around 16. Obesity rates range between a low of 14 for Colorado and a high of 23 for Texas and West Virginia. Hawaii and Massachusetts are also in the teens and the remaining states are between 20 and 23. Admissions vary greatly, as follows: Arizona, 12, Colorado, 9, Georgia, 36, Hawaii, 9, Iowa, 17, Kentucky, 42, Maine, 13, Massachusetts, 12, Michigan, 19, Missouri, 25, Texas, 31, Washington, 8, West Virginia, 42, Wisconsin, 18.
