Slide 11. Tertiary Prevention

Presentation describes the methods used by the US Preventive Services Task Force to develop recommendations.

Tertiary Prevention

Text Description is below the image.

Examples:

  • Care of an active disease that keeps a problem from getting worse.
  • Renal failure-slowing progression.
  • Mental health.
  • Cardiac/Stroke rehabilitation.

Notes:

There has been debate over whether to consider tertiary prevention as being true prevention. Regardless of the debate, tertiary prevention is a type of care. The example of renal failure fits the model: If a person has disease that is causing renal failure, then delaying the renal failure for a number of years, is counted as prevention.
