Project RED: Module 2: The Re-Designed Discharge Process: Patient Admission and Care and Treatment Education: Slide 33

Provides a four-module training program to help hospitals implement Project RED.

A True Story*

Public health nurse: “Jill, I see you are taking birth control pills. Tell me how you are taking them.”
Jill: “Well, some days I take three; some days I don't take any. On weekends, I usually take more.”
Public health nurse: “How did your doctor tell you to take them?"
Jill: “He said these pills were to keep me from getting pregnant when I have sex, so I take them anytime I have sex.”

* Graham S and Brookey J. 2008.

Notes:

This slide gives a true story of what can happen when we are not clear with instructions, assume that the patient understands the information we provide, and do not assess the patient's understanding of what we said. Thinking about this example, how might a similar event occur with a patient with heart failure or diabetes?
