Provides a four-module training program to help hospitals implement Project RED.

Health Literacy Tips*

  • Avoid medical jargon
  • Speak slowly
  • Provide simple pictures when helpful
  • Emphasize what the patient should do
  • Avoid unnecessary information
  • Welcome questions
  • Ensure written materials use simple words, short sentences in bulleted format, and lots of white space

Additional health literacy tips are offered here. Please note the emphasis on avoiding medical jargon and using pictures when possible. Speaking slowly allows the patient time to consider the information you are sharing. Allow time for questions and focus on what the patient is expected to do. While speaking, as well as in all written materials, be succinct.
