Denominator
U.S. civilian noninstitutionalized adults age 18 and older who had at least 1 visit to a doctor's office or clinic in the previous 12 months (not including visits to an emergency room).
Numerator
U.S. civilian noninstitutionalized adults age 18 and older who had at least 1 visit to a doctor's office or clinic in the previous 12 months (not including visits to an emergency room) who subsequently reported that their providers always (table 170A), usually (table 170B), or sometimes or never (table 170C) explained things in a way they could understand.
