Table 1.21: Percent of adults age 18 and over with diagnosed diabetes with most recent low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) level under 130mg/dL (minimally acceptable) or under 100mg/dL (optimal), 1988-1994 and 1999-2000

  LDL-C < 130 LDL-C < 100
Percenta Standard error Percenta Standard error
NHANES III (1988-1994) 41.8 7.0 8.4 2.7
NHANES (1999-2000) 60.0 6.5 32.9 8.0

a Percents are age-adjusted.

Note: Estimates (except sample sizes) are weighted with the morning subsample weights (Mobile Exam Center weight+ HOME weight for NHANES III; Mobile Exam Center weight for NHANES '99-'00). Age standardization used 2000 standard population with 3 age groups (18-39, 40-59, 60+). These results are generalizable only to adults with diagnosed diabetes who do not take insulin (indicating that these adults may have less severe diabetes).
