4. SUPPORT STAFF CALCULATIONS

No mass prophylaxis campaign will succeed without adequate support staff, defined as those staff not involved in direct patient contact but critical to maintaining smooth clinic operations. Calculating estimates of necessary support staff can be highly subjective and dependent on variables specific to a particular community. Where possible, BERM estimates support staff requirements by linking these numbers to either the size of the core staff or to the rate of patient flow. This approach was informed by the results of live dispensing exercises carried out in the United States in 2002 and 2003.

1: User Input for Support Staff Estimates
For each support staff category, make the appropriate selection as requested:
A) Critical Support Staff, Per Site, Per Shift
Security/Law Enforcement: Number of core staff for each security staff (i.e., ratio of core to security staff):
Recommendation = 4-8
Station Managers: Number of stations for 1 manager to supervise:
Recommendation = 3-5

Data Entry Personnel: Patients processed per min. by 1 data entry staff (i.e., ratio of patient flow to Data Entry Staff):
Recommendation = 2-4 pts/min
Information Technologists (IT): Number of data entry personnel for each IT staff:
Recommendation = 4-6
Medicine/ Vaccine Resupply Staff: Ratio of patient flow to resupply staff:
Recommendation = 1 staff for every 3-6 pts/min
EMS: Ratio of core staff to EMS staff:
Recommendation = 50 core staff for 1 EMS staff
B) Other Anticipated Support Staff Needed, Per Site, Per Shift
(e.g. Translators, Special Needs Assistants, etc.)
2. Output: Summary of Estimated Support Staff Needed for Clinic Operation
