9. Sample Physical Layout of Smallpox Vaccination Clinic

The following diagram provides an example of a Smallpox Vaccination Clinic situated on a typical high-school basketball court. The basketball court provides a footprint common to most communities and thus creates a single, consistent clinic layout that can be repeated as necessary to meet the needs of a prophylaxis campaign. Approximately 100-150 core staff can fit on a typical basketball court in this layout, a limitation that can be entered into the "RECALCULATED STAFF PER STATION BASED ON MAXIMUM STAFF SIZE LIMIT" section of Section 3: Station Specific Staffing. The briefing area (if used) presents a significant strain on available space and also determines the patient flow rate of this clinic layout. If a high-school basketball court is used, adjacent classrooms and conference rooms may be used to expand the total briefing capacity and thus increase overall patient flow.

This diagram shows a sample floor plan layout of a dispensing/vaccination clinic set up in a traditional high school basketball court meauring 50 by 84 feet. Patients enter and are sent either to medical evaluation in a contact precaution area or to a main briefing area after getting necessary forms. The contact precaution are has a separate briefing area as well as triage and vaccination or other dispensing area. Patients requiring isolation have a counseling area and a separate exit. Patients in the main area exit briefing to triage areas and then vaccination/dispensing areas. Four of these are set up in parallel for maximum throughput. Patients with contraindications or who decline vaccines or medications have a separate evaluation area. Prior to exit patients can turn in forms and receive counseling. There is a crisis counseling area in the main patient treatment area for non-contact patients as well as a command station for clinic management and logistics. This clinic may utilize briefing sites adjacent to the court (i.e., in nearby classrooms) to maximize treatment area.
