Updated and Expanded and Tools and Software from HCUP
Data from both the 2000 State Inpatient Databases (SID) and State Ambulatory Surgery Databases (SASD) are now available. In addition, the interactive online tool for hospital statistics, HCUPnet, has been enhanced with new features.
HCUP Data Sets for 2000 Are Now Available
State Inpatient Databases (SID) and State Ambulatory Surgery Databases (SASD)
The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) began making data from the 2000 State Inpatient Databases and State Ambulatory Surgery Databases available during June 2002. The 2000 SID comprise discharge abstract data from all community hospitals in 29 participating States; these data represent roughly 80 percent of U.S. hospital discharges. The 2000 SASD capture information on surgeries performed at hospital-affiliated ambulatory surgery sites in 15 States.
SID 2000 data are available for 16 States: Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, South Carolina, Utah, Washington, and Wisconsin. SASD 2000 data are currently available for Colorado, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and Wisconsin.
Updates on data availability from additional States and information on how to purchase the SID and SASD from the HCUP Central Distributor are posted online.
Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS)
Drawn from the SID, 2000 data from HCUP's powerful Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) database are also now available from the HCUP Central Distributor. The 2000 NIS includes discharge information on roughly 7 million hospital stays from about 1,000 hospitals in 28 States. The largest all-payer inpatient database in the Nation, it approximates a 20-percent sample of U.S. community hospitals and contains charge information on all patients, regardless of payer. Further information on purchasing the 2000 NIS and data availability for earlier years (beginning 1988) are available online.
HCUPNet Online Tool Enhanced With Instant Tables and Trend Data
Web-based HCUPnet has many new features to help users get answers to questions about hospital care more quickly. Drawing from SID and NIS data, HCUPnet's recent enhancements include:
- The "National Bill" for the total hospital charges for the most expensive conditions treated in U.S. hospitals.
- "Instant Tables" that give statistics on the most common conditions and procedures in U.S. hospitals.
- Seven-year (beginning 1993) trends in length of hospital stays, in-hospital deaths, charges, and other outcomes for all conditions and procedures treated in U.S. hospitals.
- Detailed national statistics on 1997 hospital stays for children using data from AHRQ's Kids' Inpatient Database (KID)—the Nation's first database devoted solely to children's hospital care in community (including pediatric) hospitals.
Future enhancements and data updates to HCUPnet will be announced online.
