The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services, Division of Health Care Services, Women's Health Program, used AHRQ's A Step-by-Step Guide to Delivering Clinical Preventive Services: A Systems Approach to direct both the structure and the content of a new guide written to support an integrated comprehensive women's health care program in the state.

Taking a quality improvement and prevention-focused approach, the Women's Comprehensive Care Improvement Project was first implemented at the Anchorage Neighborhood Health Center (ANHC). As the largest community health center in Alaska, ANHC provides health care to almost 15,000 patients.

To facilitate the implementation of similar comprehensive women's health models throughout Alaska, the Women's Health Program Coordinator, Kelly Keeter, collaborated with ANHC's on-site project coordinator, Heather Ireland, to write a manual documenting the implementation process piloted at ANHC. Introduced to the Step-by-Step Guide by Put Prevention Into Practice consultants, Keeter and Ireland used a similar methodology to write Alaska's implementation manual.

Serving as a legacy of a 2001 Health Resources and Services Administration, Maternal and Child Health Bureau Demonstration Grant, the Women's Comprehensive Care Improvement in Alaska: A Step-by-Step Implementation Guide will be available through the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services to support similar programs at federally qualified health centers, certified rural health clinics, and other medical settings.
