Figure 1. Average Inpatient Medicaid Payment per Month for Hospitalization Associated with a Principal Discharge Diagnosis of Opportunistic Illness for HIV Patients

In early 1995, the average monthly payment was $500; in mid-1995 it was $600; in early 1996 it was $500 with no protease inhibitor and $300 with protease inhibitor; in mid-1996 it was $400 with no protease inhibitor and $200 with protease inhibitor; in early 1997 it was $450 with no protease inhibitor and $250 with protease inhibitor; in mid-1997 it was $430 with no protease inhibitor and $200 with protease inhibitor.
