Figure 6.7. Contamination versus Exposure

The Figure consists of three human figures. The first two stand under the label 'Contamination' and are respectively designated 'External' and 'Internal'. The External figure has greyish yellow coloring on its hands and its lower legs up to the knees to indicate sites of contamination. The Internal figure has a spot of greyish yellow coloring within the head area, and its lungs and lower abdomen are bright yellow to indicate sites of contamination. The third figure is labeled 'Whole Body Exposure' and stands completely covered in a bright yellow ray emanating from a yellow box labeled 'S' (Source of radiation).

Note: Contamination and exposure are not the same. Patients can have external exposure to radiation, external contamination by radioactive material, internal contamination with radionuclides, or any combination thereof.

S = Source of radiation.
