TeamSTEPPS Regional Training Centers
Northwell Health
Northwell Health (formerly known as North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System) is driven by a patient-centric philosophy. Northwell Health implemented TeamSTEPPS to fulfill their vision of building a culture of safety as a foundation for daily practice. The versatility of TeamSTEPPS as an evidence-based strategy for creating transformational or incremental changes also led them to use TeamSTEPPS for continuous improvement.
Northwell Health was an early adopter of TeamSTEPPS in 2007, with a successful pilot at one of their community hospitals. Best practices for implementation began to evolve at this pilot site and subsequently developed and were spread via a rapid, structured, and systematic approach across the health system's entire continuum.
This implementation included 16 hospitals, 3 long-term care facilities, dozens of clinic and ambulatory care sites, a home care network, and emergency care services. To date, more than 36,000 Northwell Health employees have been trained in TeamSTEPPS. TeamSTEPPS has been successfully implemented and sustained through integration with the health system's care delivery model.
The course provided at Northwell Health offers an indepth look at how to implement and sustain TeamSTEPPS across a system. An interprofessional implementation panel is used so that course participants can have a dialogue with those working across the care continuum with TeamSTEPPS.

Duke University Health System
Duke University Health System (DUHS) was an early adopter of TeamSTEPPS and team training. Dr. Karen Frush, a national leader in patient safety and chief patient safety officer at Duke, was one of the early Master Trainers. She has worked closely with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) in support of the National Implementation Program. The Duke Patient Safety Office was one of the original training centers selected to participate in the AHRQ National Implementation of TeamSTEPPS in 2006 and continues to serve as a national training center.
The TeamSTEPPS training program at Duke provides an interactive overview of course content and a detailed discussion of customized implementation strategies with a diverse expert panel representing teams at varying levels of implementation. The Duke team believes that it is important to give course attendees an opportunity to discuss implementation challenges and barriers with clinicians who have applied TeamSTEPPS tools to their own clinical setting.
At the foundation of TeamSTEPPS is the involvement of the patient. Throughout the curriculum, there is an emphasis on including the patient in structured communication techniques. Duke University Health System Patient Advisory Council members are encouraged to complete the Master Trainer Course and serve as faculty in Duke’s training programs. To date, more than 10 patient volunteers have been trained as TeamSTEPPS Master Trainers and emphasize the importance of patients as part of the team by sharing their own stories.
In addition, the Duke Master Trainer faculty group includes residents and fellows from the Duke Graduate Medical Education program and additional faculty who practice in ambulatory and non-acute care settings. This background provides a unique perspective for these Master Trainers who help lead TeamSTEPPS training for groups from ambulatory clinics.

MetroHealth
MetroHealth is a large public health system consisting of a medical center and 17 health centers located throughout Greater Cleveland. In 2013, the MetroHealth staff provided care to more than 28,000 inpatients, delivered 2,900 babies, recorded nearly 1,000,000 visits in their outpatient centers, and responded to more than 107,000 visits to the emergency department. In addition to the clinical services offered, MetroHealth is an affiliate of Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) School of Medicine and is a center for medical research and education, with all active staff holding CWRU faculty appointments.
In December 2012, MetroHealth recognized the potential value of TeamSTEPPS and began exploring the "fit" of TeamSTEPPS within the organization.
To date, MetroHealth has implemented TeamSTEPPS in their Emergency Department, Trauma Unit (Level I Designation), surgical intensive care units, Burn Unit, operating rooms, Post Anesthesia Care Unit, Labor and Delivery, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Postpartum Unit, and one of their outpatient medical satellites. In addition, they have trained all their administration and foundation staff.
Overall, MetroHealth has trained about one-third of their 6,400 staff. It is important to note that "training" is not an objective, but a change in the MetroHealth culture. Once their coursework is complete, each area of the organization will establish a TeamSTEPPS Action Council. These councils will be charged with using TeamSTEPPS tools and concepts to improve patient care and safety within their areas.
Master Training courses offered at MetroHealth are led by an interprofessional team. Participants are paired up with a MetroHealth Master Trainer from a similar background during the implementation module in order to have one-on-one coaching.

UCLA Health
UCLA first began offering TeamSTEPPS Master Training in 2013, using a diverse team of interprofessional clinical and nonclinical facilitators from the Health System. Training is held within the UCLA Simulation Center, using role playing and simulation, along with lectures and group discussions. UCLA is home to Lean Six Sigma and Performance Excellence programs, which incorporate TeamSTEPPS skills in their training. UCLA Health has experienced several unit-based successes using TeamSTEPPS, most notably a reduction in Critical Care Transport Team response times.
