About the CAHPS Database

Purpose of the CAHPS Database

The primary purpose of the CAHPS Database is to facilitate comparisons of CAHPS survey results by and among survey sponsors. This voluntary compilation of survey results from a large pool of survey users into a central database enables participants to compare their own results to relevant benchmarks (i.e., reference points such as national and regional averages). The CAHPS Database also offers an important source of primary data for research related to patient and consumer assessments of quality as measured by CAHPS surveys.

What's Included in the Database?

The CAHPS Database currently contains data from the CAHPS Health Plan Survey and the CAHPS Clinician & Group Survey. The CAHPS Database may expand to include data from additional CAHPS survey instruments as resources allow.

Health Plan

The Health Plan Survey component has served as the core of the CAHPS Database since its inception in 1998. Since that time, hundreds of health plans, purchaser groups, State agencies, and others have participated in this component by submitting yearly results from the CAHPS Health Plan Survey.

Participants currently include State Medicaid agencies, Children's Health Insurance Programs (CHIP), and individual health plans serving Medicaid and CHIP enrollees. Comparative data for Medicare health plan enrollees are obtained from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

Products developed from the data contributed to the CAHPS Health Plan Survey Database include an annual Chartbook, the Online Reporting System, and Private Feedback Reports:

  • CAHPS Health Plan Survey Database Chartbook (PDF version, 748 KB). The annual Chartbook presents summary-level results for the CAHPS Health Plan Survey.
  • The Online Reporting System allows users to view, print, and download custom reports of CAHPS Health Plan Survey results for Medicaid (adult and child), CHIP (child), and Medicare (adult) populations for the two most recent years of data.
  • Private Feedback Reports. Participating organizations submitting data to the CAHPS Database are able to access a Private Feedback Report in Excel with their own results compared to the overall database average.

Clinician & Group

The CAHPS Clinician & Group Survey (CG-CAHPS) Database has been accepting survey data since 2010. It was developed in response to the growing demand for comparative results for the various versions of the Clinician & Group Survey.

Products developed from the data contributed to the CAHPS Clinician & Group Survey Database include an annual Chartbook, the Online Reporting System, and Private Feedback Reports:

  • CAHPS Clinician & Group Survey Database Chartbook (PDF version, 1.45 MB). The annual Chartbook presents summary-level results for the CAHPS Clinician & Group Survey.
  • The Online Reporting System allows users to view, print, and download custom reports of CAHPS Clinician & Group Survey results. CAHPS Clinician & Group Survey results are provided for most current versions of the survey, including the 2.0 and 3.0 versions for adult and child populations, as well as for the Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) supplemental item set.
  • Private Feedback Reports. Participating organizations submitting data to the CAHPS Database are able to access an Excel report with their own results compared to the overall database average.

Funding and Participation Fees

The CAHPS Database is supported through contract funding from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). Thus far, this funding has allowed us to waive participation fees provided that data are submitted according to our specifications and submission deadlines. Fees may be charged to cover the costs of custom analyses and technical assistance, and for compiling data files in response to authorized requests.

National Healthcare Quality Report and Disparities Report

The CAHPS Database is a key resource for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's National Healthcare Quality and Disparities Reports. This annual document is designed to support policymakers in monitoring the Nation's progress toward improved health care quality.
