David F. Schmitz, M.D., FAAFP

David Schmitz, M.D., F.A.A.F.P., is the chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences. He earned his medical doctorate from the State University of New York at Buffalo and completed residency training at the Family Medicine Residency of Idaho. He has extensive research expertise in training and retaining physicians in rural and underserved areas, emphasizing health professions education resulting in rural physician and interprofessional workforce development. He has served as the president of the National Rural Health Association and is active with several national organizations and agencies, including serving as a member of the National Advisory Council to the National Health Service Corps.
Dr. Schmitz has published and presented nationally and internationally and continues active research in rural-focused medical and graduate medical education and rural health issues such as radon exposure. He is on the editorial board of the Journal of Rural Health. He has served as the American Academy of Family Physicians representative to the National Quality Foundation MAP Rural Health Workgroup and previously as chief quality officer for the Family Medicine Residency of Idaho.
