How to Make Health Care Teams Effective
How team members interact, structure their work, and view their contributions are the most important determinants of effective teams, according to research by Google. This article identifies five dynamics of successful teams: psychological safety, dependability, structure and clarity, meaning of work, and impact of work. The authors apply these findings to health care, noting that effective teams will likely drive effective health care delivery, in alignment with Key Driver 4: Create and support high functioning teams to deliver high-quality evidence-based care. The authors also note that the most important dynamic was psychological safety, a feature of Key Driver 6: Nurture leadership and create a culture of continuous learning and evidence-based practice. The article suggests six steps to improve team performance and psychological safety.
