Sharon Phelan, M.D., graduated both medical school and her Ob–Gyn residency from the University of New Mexico. Dr. Phelan then joined the faculty at UNM Department of Ob–Gyn. In 1990 she moved to Birmingham Alabama where she joined the department at UAB. There she was the clerkship director, residency director and Assistant Director of Student Services in the Dean's Office. In 2000 Dr. Phelan returned to Albuquerque to become the Dean of Students. After 5 years in the Student Affairs Office she returned to do only OB clinical practice serving as the Medical Director for the Maternity and Family Planning Clinics, Medical Director of Labor and Delivery and Vice Chair in Dept of Ob–Gyn over Patient Safety.
During her career she has served on numerous ACOG committees including Ob Practice Committee, Grievance committee and Appeals committee as well as serving on the editorial board for the Primary Care and Prevention Precis. She recently retired from being a board examiner for ABOG after doing exams for over 15 years. She has served on the editorial boards of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Primary Care Update and Contemporary Ob–Gyn. For the past 15 years she has been a spokeperson with ACOG on the topic of smoking cessation in pregnancy. She has spoken nationally on this topic for ACOG and March of Dimes. She also has a number of publications about the issues of smoking and nicotine use in pregnancy.
