Origins
- Developed initially at the request of Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) partners in 1999.
- Using evaluation methodologies developed in the AHRQ Evidence-based Practice Centers (EPC).
- Based on readily available administrative data.
- Incorporating risk-adjustment, reference population to improve reliability and validity.

Current Modules
- Prevention Quality Indicators (PQI) developed in 2000:
- Area Level.
- Avoidable hospitalization/other avoidable conditions.
- Inpatient Quality Indicators (IQI) developed in 2002:
- Mortality, Utilization, Volume.
- Reflect quality of care in hospitals and across geographic areas.
- Patient Safety Indicators (PSI) developed in 2003:
- Provider and Area Levels.
- Complications, unexpected death.
- Pediatric Quality Indicators (PDI) developed in 2006:
- Provider and Area Levels.
- Use indicators from other modules adapted for children and neonates.
- Readmission Quality Indicators (RQI) beta release in 2011:
- Provider and Area Levels.
- Six conditions relevant to elderly and non-elderly.

- Legacy Software and Documentation:
- Modules most recently updated in March 2012 with the V4.4:
- Includes the FY2012 ICD-9-CM and MS-DRG coding update.
- V4.5 scheduled for First Quarter 2013:
- NQF updates, FY2013 coding update, 2010 reference population from State Inpatient Databases (SID).
- SAS® and WinQI software releases:
- Public-use software allows users with inpatient hospital data to calculate and compare their own QI rates.

- 2012 has focused on building the foundation for the future of the QI:
- Conversion of the QI to ICD-10-CM/PCS:

- Release planned in 2014.
- A full redesign of the QI software to offer enhanced features and usability:
- Feedback is welcomed via support@qualityindicators.ahrq.gov.
- Release(s) planned in 2013-14.
- Efforts to enhance the QI Web site with search features and other tools to improve access to QI resources.
- Conversion of the QI to ICD-10-CM/PCS:
