Pregnancy and Smoking

Audio News Release Transcript

Audio news release featuring Dr. Cathy Melvin, then director of Smoke-Free Families, discussing a New Year's resolution to quit smoking.

Both the baby and the mother benefit when she quits smoking.

NARRATOR: Having a baby? Do you smoke? Quitting smoking now is the most important thing you can do for yourself and your baby.

When you quit smoking, you'll have more energy and breathe easier. Your baby will get more oxygen, be more likely to be born at a normal weight and have healthy lungs.

Dr. Cathy Melvin, Director of Smoke-Free Families, a national health program that helps pregnant smokers quit...

Dr. MELVIN: "Quitting smoking while pregnant and staying smoke-free afterwards can eliminate most, if not all, of the baby's health risks associated with smoking. Quitting can also improve the overall health of the mother."

NARRATOR: To help you stop smoking, the U.S. Public Health Service has free information about the benefits of quitting. Just call 1-800-3-5-8-9-2-9-5 and ask for You can quit smoking: advice for pregnant women.
