How To Use the Toolkit
Toolkit To Promote Safe Surgery
The toolkit has two complementary guides that should be used together and are a good starting point: Applying CUSP To Promote Safe Surgery, and Surgical Complication Prevention. These two guides address adaptive and technical work, which are both critical elements for improvement to occur. Technical work changes procedural aspects of care that can be explicitly defined, such as surgical skin preparation procedures. Adaptive work changes the attitudes, values, beliefs, and behaviors of the people who deliver care, and can improve safety culture within an organization, thereby enabling consistent use of evidence-based practices. Both guides should be used simultaneously. Supplemental tools accompany the guides.
The toolkit also includes 15 instructional modules to help clinical teams address specific areas of competency. The modules are spread across the three phases that clinical teams will undergo as part of their quality improvement efforts: onboarding, implementation, and sustainability.
The toolkit contains the following kinds of materials:
Guides (Word): The two guides provide the structure for preventing surgical site infections and other complications. The guide to Applying CUSP To Promote Safe Surgery walks users through five steps of CUSP, and the Surgical Complication Prevention guide explains the Translating Evidence Into Practice Model and the 4 Es (engage, educate, execute, and evaluate).p>
Tools and factsheet (Word): Supplements to the guides, the tools, and the factsheet help teams critically assess perioperative processes and support the surgical setting.
Instructional modules (Word and PowerPoint): Fifteen instructional modules are spread across the three phases that clinical teams will use in their program: onboarding , implementation, and sustainability. Each module is designed to be delivered as part of a 1-hour subject matter expert-led presentation. Individuals may also wish to review the training modules.
A good place to start is the two guides, as well as the instructional module titled Overview of the Improvement Model. Other materials can be used in whatever order the user wishes.
