Grading the strength of a body of evidence when assessing health care interventions: an EPC update.
The authors discussed the state of revision of 2010 guidance on grading the strength of evidence (SOE) of the effectiveness of drugs, devices, and other preventive and therapeutic interventions in systematic reviews produced by AHRQ's Evidence-based Practice Center (EPC) program. They concluded that EPC working groups will consider ongoing challenges and modify guidance as needed, on issues such as combining trials and observational studies in bodies of evidence, weighting domains, and combining qualitative and quantitative syntheses.

Impact of an intervention to improve weekend hospital care at an academic medical center: an observational study.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of a weekend hospital intervention on processes of care and clinical outcomes. The multifaceted intervention included expanded weekend diagnostic services, improved weekend discharge processes, and increased physician and care management services on weekends. The intervention was associated with a reduction in length of stay and an increase in weekend discharges.

National assessment of early beta-blocker therapy in patients with acute myocardial infarction in China, 2001-2011: The China Patient-centered Evaluative Assessment of Cardiac Events (PEACE)-Retrospective AMI study.
The objective of this study was to perform a national quality assessment of early β-blocker use during hospitalization for AMI over the past decade in China. It found that the use of early β-blocker therapy for patients with AMI in China is suboptimal, with underuse in patients who could benefit and substantial use among those who might be harmed.

Promising practices for achieving patient-centered hospital care: a national study of high-performing US hospitals.
The researchers conducted a national study of hospitals that achieved the highest performance on Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems HCAHPS to identify promising practices for improving patient-centeredness, common challenges met, and how those were addressed. They found that high-performing hospitals used a set of patient-centered care processes that involved both leaders and clinicians in ensuring that patient needs and preferences are addressed.

Pancreatic resection results in a statewide surgical collaborative.
The authors believe that participation in a regional quality improvement collaborative may provide an alternative model to improving outcomes for patients undergoing pancreatic resection. Furthermore, they argue that a procedure-specific collaborative could help hospitals and physicians improve outcomes for complex procedures such as pancreatic resection.

Does hospital volume predict outcomes and complications after total shoulder arthroplasty in the US?
The researchers assessed the association of hospital procedure volume for total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) with patient outcomes and complications. They found that, compared to low volume hospitals (<5, 5–9, or 10–14 procedures annually), patients receiving TSA at higher volume hospitals (15–24 or ‡25 procedures annually) had significantly lower likelihood of being discharged to an inpatient medical facility.

Improving the quality of care of patients with rheumatic disease using patient-centric electronic redesign software.
To improve the quality of care for patients with rheumatic disease, the researchers developed electronic data capture, aggregation, display, and documentation software. They found that their software was adopted for use by 86% of patients and rheumatologists. They concluded that the software was well-adopted by patients and providers. Post-implementation, significant improvements in quality of care, efficiency of care, and productivity were demonstrated.

Influence of hospital and nursing home quality on hospital readmissions.
The authors sought to determine whether the quality of the hospital and of the nursing home (NH) to which a patient was discharged were related to the likelihood of rehospitalization. They found that patients discharged from higher-quality hospitals and patients who received care in higher-quality NHs were less likely to be rehospitalized within 30 days. They concluded that the passage of the Affordable Care Act changed the accountability of hospitals for patients' outcomes after discharge, and that their study highlights the joint accountability of hospitals and NHs for rehospitalization of patients.

The use of report cards and outcome measurements to improve the safety of surgical care: the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program.
This review summarized the history of American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Project and its components, and described the evidence that feeding outcomes back to providers, along with real-time comparisons with other hospital rates, leads to quality improvement, better patient outcomes, cost savings and overall improved patient safety.
