Legacy making through illness blogs: online spaces for young adults approaching the end-of-life.
The study analyzed the illness blogs of five young women (aged 25-39 years) at the end-of-life using a narrative approach. Key elements of legacy making and grief processing were explored. The women had varying experiences before their death, but uniform posthumous occurrences with the use of the blog for a space of grief for loved ones.

Has racial difference in cause-specific death improved in older patients with late-stage breast cancer?
The researchers evaluated factors associated with overall, breast cancer-specific and other-cause mortalities using contemporary population data. They concluded that breast cancer-specific mortality among older women modestly improved from 2002 to 2009 across all races, but not other-cause mortality. Racial disparity in mortality persisted, but did not widen in this period.

The effect of graft type on mortality in liver transplantation for hepatocellular carcinoma.
The researchers aimed to: (1) examine the risk of mortality in liver transplantation for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), (2) to establish if this risk is affected by partial graft use, and (3) to determine if this effect is mitigated by improved tumor-associated risk stratification. They found that the risk of mortality following LT does not differ by the type of graft used in recipients with favorable-risk HCC or those without HCC.

Does the use of neoadjuvant therapy for pancreatic adenocarcinoma increase postoperative morbidity and mortality rates?
The researchers used data from the NSQIP Pancreatectomy Demonstration Project (11/2011 to 12/2012) to identify patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma who did and did not receive neoadjuvant therapy. They found that despite evidence for more extensive disease, patients receiving neoadjuvant therapy did not experience more complications. Neoadjuvant radiation was associated with lower pancreatic fistula rates.

Treatment of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma in the elderly: regimens without anthracyclines are common and not futile.
This study characterized treatment choices and compared the 3-year overall survival rates of 8262 Medicare beneficiaries diagnosed with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma in 2000 – 2006. It found that patients treated with anthracycline-containing regimens with rituximab have the highest survival rates when all available clinical features are accounted for.

Conditional survival in patients with thyroid cancer.
This study used data from Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) registry to determine conditional 5-year disease-specific survival based on patient age, gender, and stage. It found that patients with localized thyroid cancer have excellent conditional 5-year survival, irrespective of where they are in their survivorship phase. In addition, patients with regional thyroid cancer have relatively stable conditional 5-year survival.

Health-care utilization by prognosis profile in a managed care setting: using the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results Cancer Survival Calculator SEER*CSC.
The authors described health service utilization patterns of subgroups of prostate cancer and colorectal cancer (CRC) patients with different relative probabilities of dying of their cancer or other conditions. They found that although a new diagnosis of cancer increased utilization of cancer-related services for an extended time period, the timing of cancer diagnosis did not appear to affect other types of utilization.

Hospitalization burden and survival among older glioblastoma patients.
The researchers performed a retrospective cohort study among patients aged 65 years and older with glioblastoma diagnosed between 1999 and 2007. They found that higher comorbidity score and black race were associated with an increased risk of being hospitalized for at least 25% of remaining life, whereas radiation, temozolomide, and extensive surgery were associated with a decreased risk.

The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Cancer Survival Calculator SEER*CSC: validation in a managed care setting.
The researchers externally validate the nomograms for prostate and colorectal cancer using data from Kaiser Permanente Colorado. Their results indicated that the colorectal and prostate cancer nomograms are reliable tools for physicians and patients to use to obtain information on prognosis and assist in establishing priorities for both treatment of the cancer and other conditions, particularly when a patient is elderly and/or has significant comorbidities.
