How do Hispanics/Latinos perceive and value the return of research results?
This study’s objective was to examine differences among Hispanics/Latinos by education and income in the experience and expectations about the return of research results, perceived value of specific types of information, and the least and most valuable specific information. This retrospective observational design study used a cross-sectional national survey sample of Hispanics/Latinos (n = 327). Higher educational attainment and income were both positively associated with the perceived value of getting results. Higher education respondents specifically perceived greater value in information about how lifestyle and genetics affect their risk of disease, how genetics affect how they respond to medications, their ancestry, available clinical trials near them, and how to connect with other study participants.

Prediabetes awareness is not associated with lower consumption of self-reported added sugar in U.S. adults.
This study examined whether prediabetes awareness is associated with lower consumption of self-reported added sugar in US adults 20 years and older. Cross-sectional data for 3314 adults with prediabetes were analyzed from 2013-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data. Among 3314 adults, 528 reported being aware and 2786 were unaware of their condition. Prediabetes awareness was not significantly associated with added sugar consumption with no differences for age, sex, or race/Hispanic origin.

Perspectives of hospital leaders and staff on patient education for the prevention of healthcare-associated infections.
The purpose of this study was to contribute to evidence of standardized approaches to educate patients about how they can prevent infections. The researchers explored the perspectives of hospital leaders and staff across 18 hospitals about patient education for device-related healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) including catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) and central-line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs). A total of 471 interviews were conducted with key informants and analyzed to identify themes within the topic of preventing infection through patient education. The study found that the key informants identified CAUTI and CLABSI infection-prevention-specific patient education topics including: the necessity of hand hygiene, the importance of maintenance care, the risks of indwelling urinary catheters and central lines, and having the support to voice concerns. The study concluded that hospital leaders and staff identified patient education topics and ways to deliver the information that were important in the prevention of CAUTIs and CLABSIs, and can provide guidance on how patient education can be improved.

Patients' lived experiences and recommendations for enhanced awareness and use of integrative oncology services in cancer care.
The purpose of this study was to involve patients in understanding improved clinic processes and digital health tools to support patient awareness and use of integrative oncology services. The patients were engaged in participatory design to explore their lived experiences as related to the utilization of integrative oncology services during and after conventional cancer treatment. The researchers held 10 design sessions with individual participants, which began with patient story telling regarding their path to and use of integrative oncology services. Feedback was then requested on the functionality of prototypes of mobile app screens intended to support patient symptom alleviation. The study found that oncology patients are active participants in the management of their symptoms and treatment side effects. Patients who used massage, yoga, and acupuncture reported a need for earlier patient education about those services. The study concluded that clinics can collaborate with patients to identify high priority needs, unmet needs and challenges, guide development of clinic process, and co-produce wellbeing in conventional cancer care.

Including medical footage and emotional content in organ donation educational videos for Latinx viewers.
The purpose of this 2 x 3 randomized controlled trial was to evaluate whether different types of videos shown in Latinx-owned barbershops and beauty salons affected deceased organ donor registration. Videos included medical footage of organ preservation and transplantation, as well as sad, uplifting, or unresolved stories. Impact was measured as it related to the impact of medical footage and storylines on three variables: registry enrollment, donation willingness and stage of change, and emotions. The study found that 14.8% of participants registered for deceased organ donation. Medical footage, sad, and unresolved stories did not differentially affect registration or willingness to donate organs. Compared to the uplifting story, the sad and unresolved stories increased sadness and decreased positive affect. The educational videos which included or excluded medical footage of organ preservation and transplantation and varying emotional levels of stories did not differentially affect registration. The researchers concluded that future work is necessary to analyze qualitative data that was collected with a subset of participants in order to report the qualitative reasons for participants' registration decisions.

Systematic review of the effect of technology-mediated education intervention on maternal outcomes in the first year after birth.
This systematic literature review synthesized the findings on the effect of technology-mediated education intervention in the first year after birth on maternal health outcomes and to evaluate interventions for participant perspectives and health equity. The literature search found articles published between 2010 and 2020. The authors identified 21 articles that met their inclusion criteria. Videos were the most commonly reported education intervention, followed by text messages, phone calls, and websites. Maternal health topics addressed in the included articles were mental health, weight loss, breastfeeding, general postpartum education, perineal care, and substance use. These technology-mediated interventions were shown to positively affect mental health, weight loss, and breastfeeding outcomes.

A multicentered randomized controlled trial comparing the effectiveness of pain treatment communication tools in emergency department patients with back or kidney stone pain.
The purpose of this trial was to compare the effectiveness of three approaches for communicating opioid risk during an emergency department visit for a common painful condition. Participants were adult patients with kidney stone or musculoskeletal back pain, randomly assigned to one of three risk communication strategies: a personalized probabilistic risk visual aid, a visual aid and video narrative, or general risk information. Findings showed that an emergency medicine communication tool incorporating probabilistic risk and patient narratives was more effective than general information in mitigating preferences for opioids in the treatment of pain but was not more effective with respect to opioid use or risk recall.

Early parental knowledge of late effect risks in children with cancer.
This study assessed early parental knowledge of late effect risks in children with cancer. The cohort included parents of children receiving cancer treatment at Dana-Farber/Boston Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders Center. The parents were surveyed about their knowledge of their child’s likelihood of eight late effects. Only 11 out of 96 parents correctly identified all their child’s risk for the eight late effects. Five of eight effects were the median number of correctly identified late effect risks. Among the 21 parents whose children were at risk for ototoxicity, 95% correctly identified this risk. Conversely, parents were less knowledgeable about risks of second malignancy, cardiac toxicity, neurocognitive impairment, and infertility.

Identifying over-the-counter information to prioritize for the purpose of reducing adverse drug reactions in older adults: a national survey of pharmacists.
This study’s objective was to determine which information on over-the-counter (OTC) Drug Facts Labels (DFS) is most critical in reducing adverse drug reactions (ADRs) among older adults and should be placed in front of the label. A national survey of practicing pharmacists knowledgeable about OTC medication use by older adults asked respondents to rank order the importance of the DFL sections to reduce ADRs. A total of 318 responses were analyzed. There was high consensus that uses and purposes, active ingredient, warnings, and directions for use were the most important sections on the label. Two specific warnings “Do not use” and “Ask a doctor or pharmacist” were deemed most important in the warnings section.

Patient self-management of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo: instructional video development and preliminary evaluation of behavioral outcomes.
Researchers sought to develop and preliminarily evaluate a patient-oriented benign paroxysmal positional vertigo of the posterior canal (PC-BPPV) self-management instructional video. They found that participants rated the PC-BPPV self-management video favorably on measures that contribute to behavioral intent to perform the Dix-Hallpike test or the canalith repositioning maneuver. These findings provide support that the video is appropriate to use in future studies that evaluate patient self-performance accuracy and outcomes.

Targeting versus tailoring educational videos for encouraging deceased organ donor registration in Black-owned barbershops.
Researchers assessed whether generic versus videos culturally targeted or personally tailored based on prior organ donation beliefs differentially increase organ donor registration in Black communities. They found that distributing culturally targeted and individually tailored videos increased organ donor willingness stage of change among Black men in Black-owned barbershops but was insufficient for encouraging registration.

A multifaceted intervention to improve patient knowledge and safe use of opioids: results of the ED EMC(2) randomized controlled trial.
Despite increased focus on opioid prescribing, little is known about the influence of prescription opioid medication information given to patients in the emergency department (ED). The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of an Electronic Medication Complete Communication (EMC(2)) Opioid Strategy on patients' safe use of opioids and knowledge about opioids. The study found that the EMC(2) tools improved demonstrated safe dosing, but these benefits did not translate into actual use based on medication dairies. The text-messaging intervention did result in improved patient knowledge.

An informed public's views on reducing antibiotic overuse.
The purpose of this study was to understand public attitudes about and recommendations to address antibiotic overuse by employing public deliberation (a method for eliciting informed input on value-laden issues). The investigators concluded that when informed about individual and social consequences of antibiotic overuse, patients may be more receptive to antibiotic prescription limits. They suggest that community-physician-government partnerships are needed to create solutions.

Expectations of breast-conserving therapy: a qualitative study.
The goal of this study was to describe expectations of breast-conserving therapy (BCT) among patients with early breast cancer and aimed to inform preoperative patient education and improve the patient experience through knowledge. The researchers identified themes related to patient expectations of BCT and found that patients had a clear knowledge gap regarding BCT. This data may be used to enhance preoperative discussions aimed at preparing patients for surgery and treatment.

Nutritional assessment in inpatients with cirrhosis can be improved after training and is associated with lower readmissions.
Malnutrition is widely prevalent in cirrhosis patients, which can worsen sarcopenia, hepatic encephalopathy (HE), and overall prognosis. In this study, investigators aimed to define the frequency of nutritional assessments of patients with cirrhosis in retrospective and prospective (after educational training) cohorts and to evaluate prospective changes along with their effects on 90-day readmissions. The authors concluded that nutritional consultation rates in inpatients with cirrhosis could be significantly improved after educational intervention and were associated with lower 90-day readmission rates.

Understanding implementation fidelity in a pragmatic randomized clinical trial in the nursing home setting:a mixed-methods examination.
This randomized clinical trial called Pragmatic Trial of Video Education in Nursing Homes (PROVEN) was one of the largest trials to be conducted in nursing homes on education of residents in Advanced Care Planning (ACP). The trial used videos with champions promoting ACP education across two large health-care systems. The trial length was 18 months, with champions offering video education to the residents every six months. At the end of the study 28 interviews involving 33 champions were analyzed. The researchers found different patterns between high- and low-adherence nursing homes. High-adherence nursing homes had more family and patient willingness to engage in the program and champions were better at recruitment. Champions also supplemented the video with ACP conversations.

Implementation findings from an effectiveness-implementation trial of tablet-based parent training in pediatric primary care.
The authors studied implementation of mobile delivery to deliver parent training in order to identify and address barriers and facilitators and inform sustainability efforts. They suggest that implementation fidelity may improve with additional education and training of the interdisciplinary team, clear messaging regarding the purpose and content of the program, defining roles within the care team, identifying practice champions, and use of the electronic health record. Findings from this evaluation, including data from the randomized controlled trial and literature to support intervention effectiveness and implementation, will be used to develop an implementation toolkit to include specific strategies for implementation and ideas for local adaptations.

Accessing pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP): perceptions of current and potential prEP users in Birmingham, Alabama.
Limited studies to date assess barriers to and facilitators of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake and utilization using a patient-centered access to care framework, among diverse socio-demographic groups, or in the U.S. Deep South, an area with disproportionate HIV burden. In this study, the investigators examine perceptions of PrEP access in qualitative interviews with 44 current and potential PrEP users in Birmingham, Alabama.

Factors associated with effective inhaler technique among children with moderate to severe asthma.
Guidelines recommend that children and families receive education about and demonstration of effective inhaler technique as part of asthma self-management education. For youth, improved inhaler technique is associated with better quality of life and decreased health care use, yet technique remains suboptimal. To understand potential reasons for differences in inhaler skills, this study examined individual- and health care-level factors associated with effective inhaler technique among children.

Employing a user-centered design to engage mothers in the development of a mHealth breastfeeding application.
The Mother's Milk Connection mHealth application was designed to improve breastfeeding duration and access to support. This article describes a user-centered design process to engage mothers in the development of the Mother's Milk Connection application. Stakeholder and user engagement indicated the integration of four distinct features acceptable for use as a comprehensive mHealth intervention to improve access to breastfeeding support. Further, mHealth has the potential to be a useful strategy for providing breastfeeding support, and a clinical trial regarding the efficacy of the Mother's Milk Connection application is needed.

Primary care providers' preferences and concerns regarding specific visual displays for returning hemoglobin A1c test results to patients.
Patient portals of electronic health record systems currently present patients with tables of laboratory test results, but visual displays can increase patient understanding and sensitivity to result variations. In this study, the investigators sought to assess physician preferences and concerns about visual display designs as potential motivators or barriers to their implementation.

The effects of a theory-based patient portal e-learning program for older adults with chronic illnesses.
The main aim of this study was to assess the impact of an older adult friendly Theory-based Patient portal e-Learning Program (T-PeP) on patient portal (PP) knowledge, selected health outcomes (health decision-making self-efficacy [SE] and health communication), PP SE and use, and e-health literacy in older adults. The investigators found that the T-PeP was effective in improving selected health and PP usage outcomes.

The MARIGOLD study: feasibility and enhancement of an online intervention to improve emotion regulation in people with elevated depressive symptoms.
This paper described the first two phases of pilot testing of MARIGOLD; MARIGOLD is an online self-guided positive emotion skills intervention for adults with elevated depressive symptoms, along with enhancements to overcome retention and adherence problems reported in previous research. Results suggested that positive emotion skills, plus enhancements for web-based, self-guided delivery, warrant additional study in people with elevated depressive symptoms.

Training patients to review scientific reports for the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute: an observational study.
This observational study aimed to evaluate the effect of new training for patient peer reviewers of scientific reports for the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI). A new online training in peer review was used to help change reviewers’ knowledge and skills and change self-efficacy and attitudes. Reviewers improved their answers to the knowledge questions. Median numbers of answers improved after the training, particularly in questions targeting the specifics of PCORI peer review. It modestly increased reviewers’ confidence in completing a high-quality peer review. Their excitement about providing a review slightly increased. All reviewers were satisfied with the training.

A qualitative study of the postoperative pain management educational needs of total joint replacement patients.
This study examined the challenges of pain management education for post-surgery of total joint replacement patients. The majority of patients have pain in the postoperative period and managing pain can be challenging. Nine orthopedic surgeons’ offices in 8 states recruited patients and 27 patients completed the interview. They were interviewed with open-ended questions on their experiences with pain after surgery, pain management, experiences with pain medicine, experience using non-medicine-related pain reduction methods, and suggestions for better pain management education. Challenges included lack of pain control and lack of information about prescribed opioid and nonopioid methods of managing pain.
