Interagency partnership to deliver veteran-directed home and community-based services: interviews with Aging and Disability Network agency personnel regarding their experience with partner Department of Veterans Affairs medical centers.
The objective of this article is to describe the Aging and Disability Network agency (ADNA) personnel's perceptions of the implementation of the VD-HCBS program with partner Department of Veterans Affairs medical centers (VAMCs). Results suggest that the majority of ADNA personnel interviewed perceive the collaboration experience to be positive. Interviewees reported several key mechanisms for facilitating a successful partnership.

Project ECHO (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes): a new model for educating primary care providers about treatment of substance use disorders.
ECHO is a distance education model that connects specialists with numerous PCPs via simultaneous video link for the purpose of facilitating case-based learning. This article describes a teleECHO clinic that is focused on treatment of substance use disorders (SUDs) and behavioral health disorders. It concluded that the ECHO model can promote expansion of access to treatment for opioid use disorder and other SUDs, particularly in underserved areas.

Skill assessment in the interpretation of 3D fracture patterns from radiographs.
The researchers determined if 3D radiographic image interpretation can be reliably assessed, and whether this assessment varies by level of training. They concluded that the interpretation of radiographs to discern 3D information is a promising and a relatively unexplored area for surgical skill education and assessment.

The effect of simulation-based mastery learning on thoracentesis referral patterns.
This study aimed to (1) assess the effect of simulation-based mastery learning (SBML) on internal medicine residents' simulated thoracentesis skills and (2) compare thoracentesis referral patterns, self-confidence, and reasons for referral between traditionally trained residents (non-SBML-trained), SBML-trained residents, and hospitalist physicians. This study identified confidence and time as reasons physicians refer thoracenteses rather than perform them at the bedside.

Designing an affordable wire navigation surgical simulator.
This project was focused on developing a more affordable surgical simulator that could provide high-fidelity training for the task of wire navigation. The goal of the simulator, was to provide simulated X-ray images of a real K-wire as it is placed into an artificial bone. In testing the performance of the simulator, only of the 491 reconstructions were deemed as failed reconstructions, a success rate of roughly 98 percent.

Using surgical video to improve technique and skill.
The authors argue that video analysis affords the opportunity to study both surgical technique (i.e. the details of how an operation is conducted) and surgical skill (i.e. how well a surgeon performs a procedure). This strategy may be particularly applicable for technically complex procedures that already have the capability to capture video (e.g. advanced laparoscopy, robotic surgery, video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery). Furthermore, this work could also be extended to open procedures using other video-recording modalities.

The Cambia Sojourns Scholars Leadership Program: project summaries from the inaugural scholar cohort.

Access to care for youth in a state mental health system: a simulated patient approach.
The researchers examined access to psychiatric care for adolescents with depression in outpatient specialty clinics within a state mental health system, using a simulated patient approach. They concluded that access to psychiatric care for youth with depression was variable in a state system. State-sponsored trainings on strategies to reduce wait times appear to improve care access.

Paramedic perspectives on barriers to prehospital acute stroke recognition.
The researchers aimed to understand systematically the challenges and barriers faced by paramedics in recognizing stroke presentations in the field. They concluded that while challenges to stroke recognition in the field were slightly different for rural and urban emergency medical service providers, participants concurred that timely, systematic feedback on individual patients and case-based training would strengthen early stroke recognition skills.

Combining training in knowledge translation with quality improvement reduced 30-day heart failure readmissions in a community hospital: a case study.
The authors linked multidisciplinary training in evidence-based practice to an initiative to decrease 30-day readmissions among patients admitted to a community teaching hospital for heart failure (HF). They discovered that training of a multidisciplinary hospital team in use of a knowledge translation model, combined with ongoing facilitation, led to implementation of a budget neutral program that decreased HF readmissions.

The unwritten rules of mentorship: facilitators of and barriers to effective mentorship in pediatric hospital medicine.
This study aimed to characterize successful pediatric hospitalists' past and current mentorship experiences and identify facilitators of and barriers to effective mentorship in pediatric hospital medicine (PHM). They found that several themes emerged regarding facilitators of and barriers to effective mentorship in PHM. These "unwritten rules of mentorship" may serve as a guide to establish and maintain beneficial mentorship relationships and overcome challenges.

Evacuation performance evaluation tool.
The authors described the development and implications of a disaster evacuation performance tool that measures one portion of the very complex process of evacuation. The tool was pilot tested with an administrative, medical, and nursing leadership group and then implemented with a group of healthcare workers during a disaster exercise. The authors found that the Delphi process based on the conceptual framework of DeVellis yielded a psychometrically sound evacuation performance evaluation tool for a neonatal intensive care unit.

Results of a Veterans Affairs employee education program on antimicrobial stewardship for older adults.
The authors described a course in the Veterans Affairs (VA) Employee Education System designed to engage nursing staff working in VA long-term care facilities as partners in antimicrobial stewardship. They found that the course addressed an important knowledge gap and recommended engaging nursing staff in advancing antimicrobial stewardship, particularly in the long-term care setting.

Using simulation for teaching femoral arterial access: a multicentric collaboration.
The purpose of this paper was to assess the impact of simulation training on complications associated with femoral arterial access obtained by first year cardiology fellows. The authors found that incorporation of simulation in the training of first year fellows was associated with an improvement in proficiency and a clinically meaningful reduction in vascular complications.

Protocol: simulation training to improve 9-1-1 dispatcher identification of cardiac arrest.
The researchers aim to evaluate the use of phone-based standardized patient simulation training to improve identification of the need for Telephone-CPR (T-CPR) and shorten time to start of T-CPR instructions. They specify that the STAT-911 study will evaluate if over-the-phone simulation training with standardized patients can improve 9-1-1 dispatchers' ability identify the need for, and promptly begin T-CPR.
