Validity of breast cancer surgery treatment information in a state-based cancer registry.
Surgery is an important part of early stage breast cancer treatment that affects overall survival. Statewide cancer registries contain data on first course of cancer treatment for all patients diagnosed with cancer but the accuracy of these data are uncertain. In this study, the authors examined validity of breast cancer surgery treatment information in a state-based cancer registry.

An electronic registry to improve adherence to active surveillance monitoring among men with prostate cancer at a safety-net hospital: protocol for a pilot study.
The goal of this study was to assess the efficacy and feasibility of a health information technology registry for men on active surveillance at a safety-net hospital to ensure patients receive guideline-recommended care. Use of a customized electronic approach for monitoring men on active surveillance could improve patient outcomes. It may help reduce the number of men lost to follow-up and improve adherence to timely follow-up testing.

Predictors of response outcomes for research recruitment through a central cancer registry: evidence from 17 recruitment efforts for population-based studies.
The authors conducted multivariable mixed-effects logistic regression to identify case and study characteristics associated with making contact with and obtaining cooperation of Utah cancer cases. They found that characteristics associated with lower odds of contact included Hispanic ethnicity, nonwhite race, and younger age at contact. Years since diagnosis was inversely associated with making contact. Increased odds of cooperation were associated with including a questionnaire, postage stamps, and incentives. They concluded that obtaining high response is challenging, but study features identified in this analysis support better results when recruiting through central cancer registries.

Adapting the Elixhauser comorbidity index for cancer patients.
This study was designed to adapt the Elixhauser comorbidity index for 4 cancer-specific populations and compare 3 versions of the Elixhauser comorbidity score with 3 versions of the Charlson comorbidity score for predicting 2-year survival with 4 types of cancer. Using data from the Texas Cancer Registry-linked Medicare data from 2005 to 2011, the researchers found that cancer-specific Elixhauser comorbidity scores performed slightly better than cancer-specific Charlson comorbidity scores. Individual Elixhauser comorbidities performed best.

Assessing race and ethnicity data quality across cancer registries and EMRs in two hospitals.
The objective of this study was to characterize the quality of race/ethnicity data collection efforts. The authors assessed race and ethnicity data quality across cancer registries and electronic medical records in two hospitals. Their findings suggested that high-quality race/ethnicity data are attainable. Many of the "errors" in race/ethnicity data were caused by missing or "Unknown" data values.

Automated pancreatic cyst screening using natural language processing: a new tool in the early detection of pancreatic cancer.
The purpose of this study was to implement an automated Natural Language Processing (NLP)-based pancreatic cyst identification system. It found that NLP is an effective tool to automatically identify patients with pancreatic cysts based on electronic medical records (EMR). This highly accurate system can help capture patients ‘at-risk’ of pancreatic cancer in a registry.

Quality of palliative care for patients with advanced cancer in a community consortium.
The authors formed the Carolinas Consortium for Palliative Care and collected a quality data registry to monitor their practice and to inform quality improvement efforts. They demonstrated that measures evaluating process assessment, as opposed to interventions, are better documented. They concluded that analyzing data on quality is feasible and valuable in community-based palliative care and that, overall, processes to collect data on quality using nontechnology methods may underestimate true adherence to quality measures.

Conditional survival in patients with thyroid cancer.
This study used data from Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) registry to determine conditional 5-year disease-specific survival based on patient age, gender, and stage. It found that patients with localized thyroid cancer have excellent conditional 5-year survival, irrespective of where they are in their survivorship phase. In addition, patients with regional thyroid cancer have relatively stable conditional 5-year survival.
