High-risk patient experiences associated with an intensive primary care management program in the Veterans Health Administration.
This study assessed high-risk patient experiences associated with an intensive primary care management program conducted at the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). The authors assessed patient experience using a patient survey based on the CAHPS Survey in 2019. Patient experience was assessed among 1) prior enrollees (n = 59) of an intensive management program (2014-2018); (2) nonenrollees (n = 356) at program sites; and (3) nonprogram site patients (n = 728). The VHA Office of Primary Care used a patient-centered medical home model (PACT) to deliver coordinated, continuous primary care through multidisciplinary teams. The PACT-Intensive Management (PIM) program was piloted at 5 sites from 2014 to 2018. Outcomes examined included patient ratings of patient-centered care; overall health care experience; and satisfaction with their usual outpatient care provider. Enrollees were more satisfied with their current provider versus nonenrollees within program sites. However, the authors weren’t sure if the benefits persisted after program conclusion.

Veteran perspectives on adaptations to a VA residential rehabilitation program for substance use disorders during the novel coronavirus pandemic.
This paper looks at veterans’ perspectives on adaptations made to a VA residential rehabilitation program for substance use disorders during the novel coronavirus pandemic. Adaptations to services are described within a large residential rehabilitation program for under-resourced veterans; reports veterans’ experiences; and outlines successes and challenges encountered. Data was collected from two focus groups with nine veterans in the program. The groups highlighted experiences of inconsistent communication about residential policies, interruptions to medical and addiction services, and feelings of confinement and social isolation.

The VA and Non-VA experience of tracking good care.
This study compared how well Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) hospitals perform against non-VA hospitals. Three widely referenced public health care ranking models: the U.S. News America’s Best Hospitals, Truven Health Analytics, and Hospital Compare along with the VA model were examined. The authors found that the metrics used across the 4 models are neither comparable nor transparent. They found there were 6-46% reporting deficiencies in reporting hospital metrics in non-VA hospitals, while VA reporting is 100% of their metrics. VA inpatient satisfaction fell far short of the private sector, but both sets of rankings increased over time.

Perceptions of chronic illness care among veterans with multiple chronic conditions.
The purpose of this study was to use the Patient Assessment of Chronic Illness Care (PACIC) instrument to examine perceptions of chronic care among veterans with multiple chronic conditions (MCC). The authors concluded that quality improvements are needed to strengthen care continuity and coordination.
