The invisible work of transfer centre nurses: a qualitative study of strategies to overcome communication challenges.
The objective of this study was to explore the role of transfer center nurses and their strategies to facilitate communication between providers during calls related to interhospital transfers. Researchers conducted semi-structured interviews with 17 transfer center nurses at one tertiary medical center and asked them to describe their work. The results indicated that transfer center nurses employed multiple strategies to overcome communication challenges; providers' lack of knowledge of the nurses' role can impede respectful and efficient transfer conversations. The researchers concluded that interventions to support and optimize the transfer center nurses' critical work are needed.

Primary care clinic nurse activities with a telehealth monitoring system.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate differences in the types of nursing activities and communication processes reported in a primary care clinic between patients using a home-based monitoring system to electronically communicate self-monitored blood glucose and blood pressure values and those assuming usual care. Significant differences were identified for the direct care nursing activities of providing lifestyle and health education, medication adjustments, and patient follow-up, providing evidence of greater nursing activity reported in a primary care clinic in patients who utilized a home-based monitoring system.

Information needs and the use of documentation to support collaborative decision-making: implications for the reduction of central line-associated blood stream infections.
It is clear that interdisciplinary communication and collaboration have the potential to mitigate healthcare-associated harm, yet there is limited research on how communication through documentation in the patient record can support collaborative decision making. Understanding what information is needed to support collaborative decision making is necessary to design electronic health information systems that facilitate effective communication and, ultimately, safe care. To explore this issue, the investigators focused on information needs related to central venous catheter management and the prevention of central line-associated blood stream infections.

Causes and consequences of chemotherapy delays in ambulatory oncology practices: a multisite qualitative study.
The purpose of this study was to examine the causes and consequences of chemotherapy treatment delays and possible solutions to improve quality of care. The authors identified four primary themes from the analysis that affect delays. They suggest future investigations to examine nurses' communication practices in the context of timely chemotherapy administration since communication and documentation technologies within healthcare settings continuously evolve.

Formative evaluation of the video reflexive ethnography method, as applied to the physician-nurse dyad.
Poor communication between physicians and nurses continues to contributor to adverse events in the hospital setting. This article evaluates the use of video reflexive ethnography (VRE) as a means of improving communication and improving patient safety, and concludes that video-record communication between physicians and nurses during patient care rounds is feasible and acceptable.

Workarounds to intended use of health information technology: a narrative review of the human factors engineering literature.
This narrative review sought to integrate and synthesize insights from recent studies of workarounds to the intended use of health information technology (HIT) by health care professionals. It concluded that workarounds were employed to avoid changes to workflow, enable interdisciplinary communication, coordinate activities, and have real-time portable access to summarized and synthesized information.

Strategies to improve management of shoulder dystocia under the AHRQ Safety Program for Perinatal Care.
The purpose of this study using TeamSTEPPS was to assess the implementation of safety strategies to improve management of births complicated by shoulder dystocia in labor and delivery units. Results suggested that successful management of shoulder dystocia requires a rapid, standardized, and coordinated response. The Safety Program for Perinatal Care strategies to increase safety of shoulder dystocia management are scalable, replicable, and adaptable to unit needs and circumstances.

Communication in the electronic age: an analysis of face-to-fact physician-nurse communication in the emergency department.
This study described the patterns and content of nurse to physician verbal conversations in three emergency departments (EDs) with electronic health records. It found that physician participants experienced significantly more communication events than nurse participants, while nurses initiated significantly more communication events than physicians. Most of the communication events occurred at the physician workstation followed by patient treatment areas.

Evidence-based approaches to breaking down language barriers.
This article provides background information about language barriers between nurses and patients and some strategies for addressing these gaps. After detailing how these barriers affect patient outcomes, practice-based strategies are offered to improve outcomes and reduce readmissions. Although the article doesn’t address barriers to communicating with patients with hearing loss, many of the same principles apply to these patients.

Disaster management: communication up, across, and down.
This case study uses the National Preparedness Leadership Initiative’s (NPLI) meta-leadership model as the guiding framework for developing and implementing an evacuation exercise focused on the safe evacuation of neonates. Key components of this framework include strategies for communicating up, across, and down among various stakeholders.

Challenges for nurses caring for individuals with peripherally inserted central catheters in skilled nursing facilities.
The researchers sought to understand the perceived preparedness of frontline nurses (registered nurses (RNs), licensed practical nurses (LPNs)), unit nurse managers, and skilled nursing facility (SNF) administrators in providing care for residents with peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) in SNFs. They noted differences between resident self-reported PICC concerns (quality of life) and those described by frontline nurses.

Characterizing the structure and content of nurse handoffs: a Sequential Conversational Analysis approach.
This paper describes Sequential Conversational Analysis (SCA) - a mixed-method approach integrating qualitative conversational analysis with quantitative sequential pattern analysis. This approach allows characterization of the nature of nurse handoff communication, highlighting the relationships underlying verbal content. The authors also discuss how SCA can help in understanding the dynamics of communication in other settings.
