Trends in the utilization of penile prostheses in the treatment of erectile dysfunction in the United States.
This study assessed the national temporal trends in the surgical management of ED utilizing penile prosthesis (PP). It found that the surgical management of ED with PP changed significantly between 2001 and 2010. Also, the overall utilization of PP decreased, but its use in patients with significant medical comorbidities increased.

Emergency department use in the US-Mexico border region and violence in Mexico: is there a relationship?
This study assessed the association between homicide rates in northern Mexico and potentially avoidable use of emergency departments (ED) in the US-Mexico border region. It concluded that a substantial majority of ED encounters in the US-Mexico border region were potentially avoidable. However, there was not a strong relationship between homicide rates in northern Mexico and the distribution of ED discharges in Arizona and California.

Pediatric dental clinic location and utilization in a high-resource setting.
This study examined dental utilization by Medicaid-insured children living in a high-resource area and characterized distance and travel-related variables to accessing care. It concluded that closer proximity may contribute to the higher utilization of services observed compared with national rates.

Utilization of surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and hospice at the end of life for patients diagnosed with metastatic melanoma.
The authors examined the patterns of utilization of radiation therapy, chemotherapy, surgery, and hospice at the end-of-life care for patients diagnosed with metastatic melanoma. They found that surgery and hospice care use increased over the 8 years of this study, whereas the use of chemotherapy and radiation therapy remained consistent for patients diagnosed with metastatic melanoma.

Associations between practice-reported medical homeness and health care utilization among publicly insured children.
This study assessed the relationship between having a patient-centered medical home and use of health services by children enrolled in Medicaid in three States. The researchers found that medical homeness was not associated with the likelihood of receiving well-child care. Association of medical homeness with non-urgent, preventable, or avoidable emergency department visits varied.

Socio-demographic and geographic variations in the utilization of hormone therapy in older women with breast cancer after Medicare Part-D coverage.
The researchers assessed socio-demographic, geographic, and other variations in the receipt of hormone therapy among patients with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer as well as adherence to hormone therapy within 1-year follow-up. They found that found that increasing age was significantly associated with a decreased receipt of hormone therapy and aromatase inhibitors in all hormone receptor-positive breast cancer patients after adjusting for other factors regardless of whether chemotherapy was received.

When do patient-reported outcome measures inform readmission risk?
The study sought was to characterize changes in patient-reported outcome measures from hospital discharge to assess when they best inform risk of utilization as defined by readmissions or emergency department use. It concluded that routine measurement of patient-reported outcomes can help identify patients at higher risk for utilizations. For example, in-hospital assessments revealing high symptom burden and poor health status predicted 14-day reutilization.

First outpatient follow-up after psychiatric hospitalization: does one size fit all?
This study examined the timing of first outpatient follow-up and subsequent health care utilization for adults with serious mental illness (major depression or schizophrenia) and comorbid general medical conditions. It found that for patients not readmitted within 30 days, follow-up within 30 days appeared to be beneficial on the basis of subsequent service utilization.

Impact of hepatitis coinfection on healthcare utilization among persons living with HIV.
The purpose of this study is to characterize the impact of hepatitis coinfection on utilization of primary HIV care, mental health, and inpatient services. It found no difference in primary HIV care utilization according to hepatitis serostatus. However, patients with HIV/HCV coinfection demonstrated higher rates of mental health visits than any of the other groups examined.

Stress testing before low-risk surgery: so many recommendations, so little overuse.
The researchers sought to determine the prevalence of cardiac stress testing before low-risk surgeries, prior to commencement of a campaign to reduce routine stress testing, in order to estimate the potential effect of the campaign on future use of resources. Their study of VA and Medicare patients found that the use of routine preoperative stress testing before low-risk surgeries was very low, suggesting that interventions to further decrease testing would minimally improve quality.

Mammograms on-the-go-predictors of repeat visits to mobile mammography vans in St Louis, Missouri, USA: a case-control study.
The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which women use mobile mammography vans for breast cancer screening and what factors are associated with repeat visits to these vans. Women who were aged 50–65, uninsured, or African-American had higher odds of a repeat visit to the mobile mammography van compared with women who were aged 40–50, insured, or Caucasian.

Comparative effectiveness of injectable paliperidone palmitate versus oral atypical antipsychotics: early postmarketing evidence.
The researchers compared the likelihood of hospitalization and emergency department visits in Medicaid patients from the state of Missouri starting paliperidone palmitate versus oral atypical (also known as second-generation) antipsychotics. They found that paliperidone palmitate treatment resulted in a statistically significant 37 percent reduction in the adjusted likelihood of an all-cause emergency department visit. There was no statistically significant reduction in hospitalization.

Modifiable factors associated with allopurinol adherence and outcomes among patients with gout in an integrated healthcare system.
The investigators identified modifiable patient and provider factors associated with allopurinol adherence and the achievement of a serum urate acid (SUA) goal in gout. They found that among patients with gout initiating allopurinol in their study, 68% did not reach the SUA goal and 57% were nonadherent. They concluded that modifiable factors, including allopurinol dose escalation, treatment adherence, rheumatology referral, and concomitant medication use, could be important factors to consider in efforts aimed at optimizing gout treatment outcomes.

National trends in the use of postcardiac arrest therapeutic hypothermia and hospital factors influencing its use.
The goal of this study is to use population-based national hospital discharge data to examine trends in the use of therapeutic hypothermia (TH) in both in- and out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients after implementation of the 2005 American Heart Association guidelines. Its findings demonstrate that while TH use is increasing, the overall utilization of TH relative to all cardiac arrests remains very low.

Patients who use multiple EDs: quantifying the degree of overlap between ED populations.
The researchers estimated the proportion of emergency department (ED) patients who seek care from more than one ED by using a sample of three EDs in a region with a total of 18 EDs and one dedicated pediatric ED. They found that most repeat encounters occur within a single ED rather than among multiple EDs. Nonetheless, nearly one of every four ED encounters were by patients who also visited another ED during the study period.

A patient navigation intervention for drug-involved former prison inmates.
The researchers designed a randomized controlled trial of patient navigation to reduce barriers to health care and hospitalizations for former prison inmates. They found recruitment of former inmates highly feasible, but found that follow-up was limited by rearrests. They concluded that their results suggest a significantly lower rate of hospitalizations among navigation participants, although the rate of emergency department/urgent care visits was not improved.
