Content and trends in medical informatics publications over the past two decades.
This study aims to identify subject content and trends in the medical informatics literature in order to shed light on the past, current, and future directions of diverse education and research activities. It found 73 core topics and 72 new topics of medical informatics within three relevant MeSH categories (informatics, techniques, and healthcare).

Use contexts and usage patterns of interactive case simulation tools by HIV healthcare providers in a statewide online clinical education program.
The researcher analyzed four interactive case simulation tools (ICSTs) from a statewide online clinical education program. Results have shown that ICSTs are increasingly used by HIV healthcare providers. Smart phone has become the primary usage platform for specific ICSTs. Usage patterns depend on particular ICST modules, usage stages, and use contexts.

Appreciative advising: an innovative approach to advising doctor of nursing practice students.
In this article the authors discuss the need for appreciative advising (AA) in doctor of nursing practice educational programs. Appreciative advising includes both individual and group sessions to provide individual mentoring and a supportive community of peers. It has emerged as an alternative to prescriptive advising and allows faculty and students to develop shared goals.

The simulation-based assessment of pediatric rapid response teams.
The researchers created scenarios of simulated decompensating pediatric patients to train pediatric rapid response teams (RRTs) and to determine whether the scenario scores provide a valid assessment of RRT performance with the hypothesis that RRTs led by intensivists-in-training would be better prepared to manage the scenarios than teams led by nurse practitioners. The greater scores achieved by intensivist-in-training-led teams provides some evidence to support the validity of the assessment.

Contextual influences of trainee characteristics and daily workload on trainee learning preferences.
In this study, the investigators sought to understand whether trainee characteristics and daily fluctuations in workload influence the prioritization of various teaching domains necessary for successful inpatient medicine attending rounds. They conducted a prospective observational study in general medicine inpatient wards at a university, Veterans Affairs, and a county hospital affiliated with one academic institution over the course of 6 months.

Multi-institutional randomized trial testing the utility of an interactive three-dimensional contouring atlas among radiation oncology residents.
The present study reports on the efficacy and usability of a web-based contouring atlas compared with those of existing contouring resources in a randomized trial. Compared with the residents using currently available resources, the residents using eContour had improved contour agreement with both the consensus and the expert contours for the high-risk clinical target volume and greater agreement with the expert contour for the contralateral parotid gland.

The use of social media in graduate medical education: a systematic review.
The authors conducted a systematic review of the peer-reviewed literature to understand the effect of social media on resident (1) education, (2) recruitment, and (3) professionalism. Their review of 29 studies concluded that the effect of social media platforms on residency education, recruitment, and professionalism is mixed, and the quality of existing studies is modest at best.

The career advising program: a strategy to achieve gender equity in academic medicine.
This paper discusses the significant gender disparities in academic rank which exist at US medical schools, even after controlling for age, time since training, specialty, and measures of productivity, and despite increasing numbers of women entering medicine over the past 30 years. They highlight the Society of General Internal Medicine’s Women and Medicine Task Force and the model they launched in 2013 to address these disparities- the Career Advising Program (CAP).

Effects of a retention interval and refresher session on intracorporeal suturing and knot tying skill and mental workload.
The effects of refraining from practice for different intervals on laparoscopic suturing and mental workload were assessed with a secondary task developed by the authors. When participants who reached proficiency in suturing and knot tying were reassessed after either 1 or 5 months without practice, their performance times increased by 35 percent and secondary task scores decreased by 30 percent. These deficits, however, were nearly reversed after a single refresher session.

Association between flexible duty hour policies and general surgery resident examination performance: a Flexibility in Duty Hour Requirements for Surgical Trainees (FIRST) Trial analysis.
This study investigated whether a flexible, less-restrictive duty hour policy (Flexible Policy) was associated with differential general surgery examination performance compared with current ACGME duty hour policy (Standard Policy). It found that flexible, less-restrictive duty hour policies were not associated with differences in general surgery resident performance on examinations during the FIRST Trial.

Infection prevention and antimicrobial stewardship knowledge for selected infections among nursing home personnel.
This study assessed knowledge about infection prevention among nursing home personnel and identified gaps potentially addressable through a quality improvement collaborative. It found that, while 99.1 percent of licensed personnel recognized the definition of asymptomatic bacteriuria, only 36.1 percent knew that pyuria could not distinguish a urinary tract infection from asymptomatic bacteriuria.

Maintenance of certification: how performance in practice changes improve tobacco cessation in addiction psychiatrists' practice.
This study reports on findings from a Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Performance in Practice (PIP) module designed and evaluated by addiction psychiatrists who are members of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry. It found that simple change projects designed to improve clinical practice led to substantial changes in self-reported chart documentation for the selected measure.

Transforming physician certification to support physician self-motivation and capacity to improve quality and safety.
The American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) is making strategic investments in the next major evolution of continuous certification. The ABFM is the first certifying board to launch a registry that is designed to support physician capacity for quality assessment, improvement, data-reporting requirements, and population management. The ABFM aims to help physicians maintain the privilege of self-governance by helping them continuously earn it.

Evaluation of a statewide HIV-HCV-STD online clinical education program by healthcare providers - a comparison of nursing and other disciplines.
The authors evaluated the New York State HIV-HCV-STD Clinical Education Initiative (CEI) online education program and compared the self-reported measures by clinicians from different disciplines. They found that physicians and nurse practitioners were the most satisfied, while pharmacists and case/care managers recorded lower than average responses. They recommended that online education programs consider the unique needs by clinicians from specific disciplines.

Skill assessment in the interpretation of 3D fracture patterns from radiographs.
The researchers determined if 3D radiographic image interpretation can be reliably assessed, and whether this assessment varies by level of training. They concluded that the interpretation of radiographs to discern 3D information is a promising and a relatively unexplored area for surgical skill education and assessment.

Teaching health care workers to adopt a systems perspective for improved control and prevention of health care-associated infections.
The authors argue that procedural approaches alone, even with high levels of adherence, are often insufficient to solve the growing problem of health care-associated infections (HAIs); it is equally important that interventions address the more complex cognitive aspects of HAI control and prevention. Health care workers (HCWs) face many patient care situations for which standard procedures have not been and cannot be developed.

The effect of simulation-based mastery learning on thoracentesis referral patterns.
This study aimed to (1) assess the effect of simulation-based mastery learning (SBML) on internal medicine residents' simulated thoracentesis skills and (2) compare thoracentesis referral patterns, self-confidence, and reasons for referral between traditionally trained residents (non-SBML-trained), SBML-trained residents, and hospitalist physicians. This study identified confidence and time as reasons physicians refer thoracenteses rather than perform them at the bedside.

Applying mathematical models to predict resident physician performance and alertness on traditional and novel work schedules.
Using a mathematical model of the effects of circadian rhythms and length of time awake on objective performance and subjective alertness, the researchers compared predictions for traditional intern schedules to those that limit work to </= 16 consecutive hours. Their model predicted fewer hours with poor performance and alertness, especially during night-time work hours, for all three novel schedules than for either of the two traditional schedules.

A leadership development program for surgeons: first-year participant evaluation.
The researchers evaluated a Leadership Development Program for practicing surgeons by exploring how the program's strengths and weaknesses affected the surgeons' development as physician-leaders. They found that surgeon-participants reported positive impacts of the program on their day-to-day work activities and general career perspective as well as on their long-term career development plans. The participants also recommended areas where the program could be improved. The authors concluded that a curriculum designed specifically for surgeons may enable future programs to equip surgeons better for important leadership roles in a complex health care environment.

The development of tracheal intubation proficiency outside the operating suite during pediatric critical care medicine fellowship training: a retrospective cohort study using cumulative sum analysis.
The researchers hypothesized that both overall and first-attempt tracheal intubation success rates by pediatric critical care medicine fellows would improve over the course of training. They found that all fellows who completed 3 years of training during the study period achieved an acceptable 90% overall tracheal intubation success rate. They concluded that further investigations on a larger scale across different training programs are necessary to clarify intensity and duration of the training to achieve tracheal intubation procedural competency.

Ability and use of comparative effectiveness research by P&T committee members and support staff: a 1-year follow-up.
The study’s objective was to provide a follow-up assessment of the use of comparative effectiveness research (CER) in the pharmacy and therapeutics (P&T) committee decision-making process, using information collected from participants 1 year after attending a live continuing education program. It concluded that health professionals attending a continuing education CER program reported higher use of CER materials compared with nonattendees.
