A Latino patient-centered, evidence-based approach to diabetes prevention.
Cultural tailoring of evidence-based diabetes prevention program (DPP) interventions is needed to effectively address obesity and its related chronic diseases among Latinos in primary care. This article described the patient-centered process used to adapt the DPP and reported cultural adaptations. The investigators concluded that the 2-stage approach actively engaging patients, family members, providers, and health care system leaders reinforced the cultural congruence of the existing intervention while further strengthening it with adaptations promoting Latino family and community support.

Impact of patient involvement on clinical practice guideline development: a parallel group study.
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of patient and public involvement (PPI) on guideline question formation and validate a conceptual model of patient and public contributions to guidelines. The qualitative analysis of the discussions occurring during guideline question development demonstrated key differences in group conduct and validated the proposed conceptual model of patient and public contributions to guidelines.

A community engagement method to design patient engagement materials for cardiovascular health.
This trial included development of locally tailored cardiovascular disease (CVD) patient engagement materials through Boot Camp Translation (BCT), a community engagement process that occurred before practice recruitment but after cluster randomization. The 4 BCTs' messages and materials developed by the BCT groups uniquely reflected each community and ranged from family or spiritual values to early prevention or adding relevance to CVD risk.

Approach to assessing and using clinical practice guidelines.
Knowing when to use guidelines in clinical practice requires neurologists to assess the rigor of published guidelines. This review briefly describes guideline definitions and the American Academy of Neurology process for guideline development, outlines key elements for assessing guideline quality, and details a practical approach for incorporating guideline recommendations when partnering with patients in shared decision-making.

Decision aid use during post-biopsy consultations for localized prostate cancer.
The purpose of this study was to characterize the content and communicative function of high-quality decision aids during diagnostic clinic visits for prostate cancer. Results showed that good decision aids, systematically provided to patients, appeared to function not to open up deliberations about how to balance benefits and harms of competing treatments, but rather to allow patients to ask narrow technical questions about recommended treatments.
