Improvement in mental health following total hip arthroplasty: the role of pain and function.
This prospective study examined whether mental health improved in patients who had total hip arthroplasty (THA) due to improvement in pain and function 1 year post-surgery. Patients enrolled in a THA registry from 2010 to 2014 were included and the mental component score (MCS) was examined before and 1 year post-surgery. There was a significant improvement in mental health due to less pain and improved function.

Factors associated with achieving a body mass index of less than 30 after bariatric surgery.
This study identified predictors for achieving a BMI of less than 30 after bariatric surgery. Patients who had a sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, or duodenal switch were more likely to achieve a BMI of less than 30 compared with those who underwent adjustable gastric banding. Only 8.5 percent of patients with a BMI greater than 50 achieved a BMI of less than 30 after bariatric surgery.

Combinations of chronic conditions, functional limitations, and geriatric syndromes that predict health outcomes.
The researchers aimed to identify combinations of chronic conditions, functional limitations, and geriatric syndromes that predict poor health outcomes. They found that functional limitations and/or geriatric syndromes were the most prominent conditions in predicting health outcomes. They concluded that accounting for chronic conditions alone may be less informative than also accounting for the co-occurrence of functional limitations and geriatric syndromes, as the latter conditions appear to drive health outcomes in older individuals.

Financial strain and cancer outcomes.
This editorial discusses an article by Lathan et al. in the same issue that documents the strong associations between socioeconomic status and longevity. The editorial argues that many of the variables in that article are measured with error and, as a result, the multivariable analysis resulted in only partial adjustment. Two variables of particular importance, education and ethnicity, are discussed.

Variation in health outcomes: the role of spending on social services, public health, and health care, 2000-09.
This study found that states with a higher ratio of social to health spending (calculated as the sum of social service spending and public health spending divided by the sum of Medicare spending and Medicaid spending) had significantly better subsequent health outcomes for the following seven measures: adult obesity; asthma; mentally unhealthy days; days with activity limitations; and mortality rates for lung cancer, acute myocardial infarction, and type 2 diabetes.

Comparative effectiveness of iron and erythropoiesis-stimulating agent dosing on health-related quality of life in patients receiving hemodialysis.
The researchers examined the independent associations of bolus versus maintenance iron dosing and high versus low erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESA) dosing on health-related quality of life (HRQoL). They found that for individuals with low baseline hemoglobin levels, higher ESA dosing and bolus iron dosing were associated with slightly higher HRQoL scores in follow-up.

Improvement in patient-reported physical and mental health after parathyroidectomy for primary hyperparathyroidism.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) assessment in the clinical setting to measure changes in patient-reported health before and after parathyroidectomy. It found that PROMIS is an efficient clinical assessment platform for measuring patient-reported outcomes in primary hyperparathyroidism via computer-adaptive testing.

Did Medicare Part D affect national trends in health outcomes or hospitalizations? A time-series analysis.
The researchers examined changes in health outcomes and medical services in the Medicare population after implementation of Medicare Part D. They found that 5 years after implementation, and contrary to previous reports, there was no evidence of Part D's effect on a range of population-level health indicators among Medicare enrollees. Further, there was no clear evidence of gains in medical care efficiencies.

Health-related quality of life in lung cancer survivors: Latent class and latent transition analysis.
The authors determined the HRQOL classes that exist among lung cancer survivors, examined transitions among those classes over time, and compared survival outcomes of patients according to the classes present in the initial phase of care. Lung cancer survivors were characterized into 4 different classes based on HRQOL responses, and few survivors transitioned to better HRQOL classes.

Multimorbidity redefined: prospective health outcomes and the cumulative effect of co-occurring conditions.
The researchers explored the prospective effects of multimorbidity on health outcomes (health status, major health decline, and mortality). They found a strong and significant association between multimorbidity and prospective health status, major health decline, and mortality and concluded that multimorbidity may be used — both in clinical practice and in research — to identify older adults with heightened vulnerability for adverse outcomes.
