Emergency department visits for suicidal ideation and self-harm in rural and urban youths.
The authors sought to compare emergency department (ED) visit rates for suicidal ideation and/or self-harm among youth by urban-rural location of residence. Data was taken from the Nationwide Emergency Department Sample. They found that, compared with youths living in urban areas, youths living in rural areas had higher ED visit rates for self-harm, including self-inflicted firearm injuries. The researchers recommended preventive approaches for self-harm based in community and ED settings in order to help address these differences.

Behavioral health diagnoses among children and adolescents hospitalized in the United States: observations and implications.
The study described rates and characteristics of U.S. children hospitalized with a behavioral (mental or substance use) disorder. The study concluded that nearly 500,000 pediatric admissions in 2012 included behavioral disorders. Comorbidities were associated with longer stays and an estimated $1.36 billion additional annual costs, which were disproportionately borne by public insurance.

Contributions of children with multiple chronic conditions to pediatric hospitalizations in the United States: a retrospective cohort analysis.
Researchers assessed how much of US pediatric inpatient care is used by children with multiple chronic conditions (CMCC) and which chronic conditions are the key drivers of hospital use. CMCC accounted for over one-fourth of acute-care hospitalizations and one-half of all hospital dollars for US pediatric care in 2012. Substantial CMCC hospital resource use involves children with mental health-related conditions.

Annual report on health care for children and youth in the United States: national estimates of cost, utilization and expenditures for children with mental health conditions.
This study examined national trends in hospital utilization, costs, and expenditures for children with mental health conditions between 2006 and 2011. It found that hospitalizations for all listed mental health conditions increased by nearly 50 percent among children aged 10 to 14 years and by 21 percent for emergency department visits.
