Association of Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act with insurance status, cancer stage, and timely treatment among patients with breast, colon, and lung cancer.
The effect of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act's Medicaid expansion on cancer care delivery and outcomes is unknown. Patients with cancer are a high-risk group for whom treatment delays are particularly detrimental. The objective of this study was to examine the association between Medicaid expansion and changes in insurance status, stage at diagnosis, and timely treatment among patients with incident breast, colon, and non-small cell lung cancer.

Access to preventive services after the integration of oral health care into early childhood education and medical care.
The authors compared children enrolled in North Carolina Early Head Start (EHS) programs with similar children enrolled in Medicaid but not EHS on the use of POHS. They analyzed 4 dependent variables (oral assessment by medical health care provider, oral assessment by oral health care provider, fluoride application by medical health care provider, fluoride application by oral health care provider) by using multivariate logistic regression that controlled for covariates.

Medicaid coverage accuracy in electronic health records.
The objective of the study was to evaluate the validity of electronic health record (EHR) data for monitoring longitudinal Medicaid coverage and assess variation by patient demographics, visit types, and clinic characteristics. The researchers conducted a retrospective, observational study comparing Medicaid status agreement between Oregon community health center EHR data linked at the patient-level to Medicaid enrollment data (gold standard).

Medicaid expansion and health plan quality in Medicaid managed care.
The purpose of the study was to assess the effect of the 2014 Medicaid expansion on Medicaid managed care plan quality. The study concluded that Medicaid expansion increased enrollment in managed care plans, but it did not result in erosion of quality.

Oregon Medicaid Expenditures after the 2014 Affordable Care Act Medicaid expansion: over-time differences among new, returning, and continuously insured enrollees.
This study assessed health care expenditures among Medicaid enrollees in the 24 months after Oregon's 2014 Medicaid expansions and examine whether expenditure patterns were different among the newly, returning, and continuously insured (CI). After initial increases, newly and returning insured (RI) outpatient expenditures dropped below CI. Expenditures for emergency department and dental services among the RI remained higher than among the newly insured.

Recent health care use and Medicaid entry of Medicare beneficiaries.
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between Medicaid entry and recent health care use among Medicare beneficiaries. Although recent health care use predicted greater likelihood of Medicaid entry, half of new Medicaid participants used no hospital or nursing home care during the study period.

Medicaid's lasting impressions: population health and insurance at birth.
This article examines lasting mortality improvements associated with availability of Medicaid at time and place of birth. Being born after Medicaid was associated with between 2.03 and 3.64 fewer deaths per 100,000 person-years in childhood and between 1.35 and 3.86 fewer deaths per 100,000 person-years in the thirties. The association between Medicaid at birth and mortality was the strongest in the oldest age group (36-40) in this study.

Comparison of health care spending and utilization among children with Medicaid insurance.
This study's objectives were to assess health care and spending among children with Medicaid insurance by their resource use. It found that as resource use increases in children with Medicaid, spending rises unevenly across health services: Spending on primary care rises modestly compared with other health services.

The effect of health insurance coverage on medical care utilization and health outcomes: evidence from Medicaid adult vision benefits.
The reserarchers examined the effect of vision insurance on eye care utilization and vision health outcomes by taking advantage of quasi-experimental variation in Medicaid coverage of adult vision care. They found that Medicaid beneficiaries with vision coverage are 4.4 percentage points more likely to have seen an eye doctor in the past year, and 5.3 percentage points less likely to report needing but not purchasing eyeglasses or contacts due to cost.

Estimating demand for care after a Medicaid expansion: lessons from Oregon.
In order to estimate how the Affordable Care Act's Medicaid expansions will affect demand for services, the authors measured ambulatory care utilization among adult patients who gained insurance during Oregon's 2008 Medicaid expansion. They found that, in comparisons of the pre- and postcoverage periods, the mean annual encounters among persons who gained insurance increased 22% to 35%, but declined in the comparison groups.
