Using state administrative data to identify social complexity risk factors for children.
Researchers aimed to test the feasibility of using an integrated state agency administrative database to identify social complexity risk factors and examine their relationship to emergency department (ED) use. They concluded that State administrative data can be used to identify social complexity risk factors associated with higher rates of ED use among Medicaid-insured children.

Enhancing administrative data to predict emergency department utilization: the role of neighborhood sociodemographics.
Much of emergency department (ED) use is avoidable, and high-quality primary care can reduce it, but performance measures related to ED use may be inadequately risk-adjusted. To explore associations between ED use and neighborhood poverty, a secondary analysis of Massachusetts managed care network data, 2009-2011, was conducted.

Patterns of breast magnetic resonance imaging use in community practice.
The researchers described patterns of breast MRI use in US community practice during the period 2005 through 2009. They found that the overall rate of breast MRI from 2005 through 2009 nearly tripled from 4.2 to 11.5 examinations per 1000 women, with the most rapid increase from 2005 to 2007.

Health information exchange improves identification of frequent emergency department users.
The goal of the project was to measure the incremental increase in the number of frequent ED users who were identified when data
from all EDs participating in an health information exchange were compared with site-specific data. When the researchers analyzed HIE-wide data instead of site-specific data, they identified 20.3 percent more frequent ED users and 16.0 percent more visits by them to the ED.
